What? No. We know he's at least half-white because we know that his father is from northern Europe. Specifically, he is the Norse god Odin. So, I mean, it's hard for me to see how he wouldn't be at least half-white, if his mother is non-white and his father is white

Also, are Spanish people not white?

I'm seriously so confused by your post

Sorry for the confusion...there was an SJW on a Star Trek secret awhile back, trying to make the case that Ricardo Montalban was white. That's what I was thinking of.

As for the rest of your argument, I cover it in my posts above. Odin, fictional, allegorical, even if you think Odin lives, Odin is not white, either. Odin (in-universe anyway) is a divine being. Ergo, no skin colour.

Now, my reasoning could very well be completely off-the-wall here, but that's just how I see it.

So would you be okay with someone casting a white dude to play Fat Charlie from Anansi Boys, on the ground that even though Mr Nancy is a black god from the Caribbean, his children could be any race?

Seriously, though, I think that's fine to say that Odin and Odin's kids could be any skin color, but I also think it's a fairly reasonable and intuitive thing to assume that because he's a Norse god, that he's going to appear Norse (in the same way that the Egyptian gods are probably going to appear Egyptian and Mr Nancy is going to appear African) and that his kids are mostly going to take that trait on from him. I think you can definitely justify all kinds of other things but I don't think that's a harmful or unreasonable default assumption? I guess? Is my point here?

Let me be clear about this: I think Shadow is dark-skinned like his mother. His father being Odin, is his "half-divine" part, which doesn't include the skin colour, in my thinking. I have stated repeatedly this may just be my own particular weird way of looking at the book, and may have no basis in reality, and I will state it again.

As for Mr. Nancy...from what I recall of the legba/loas they can possess anyone, which means they can inhabit anyone of any ethnicity. Fat Charlie just happens to be the particular ethnicity of the particular people Mr. Nancy and his pals possessed on a regular basis.

Again we are getting into the takes the human bit from the mother and the divine/god/god-like bit from the father, which I always read as a recurring theme in Gaiman's work. (Which, yes, I could be wrong about.)

.....aaaaaaaand I need to stop arguing about this now. Sorry! :-P

Not that Anon but a very confused Spanish anon. Montalban parents were born in Spain and would be considered white, so how can he be considered not white?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
na

Spanish people as in "people from Spain" are Caucasians.
It's ridiculous to imply they should be considered PoC just because other Spanish speaking people (Mexicans) get racist shit in the US.

I think you replied to the wrong person, anon you're responding to was confused because the original one said Spanish people were PoC

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
... Moorish Spain?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
hispanic people can be both white and poc. also, caucasian is not a blanket term for white.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
