How many words in a chapter?

Lately I've been writing some fanfiction to pass the time until Maghrib prayers arrive and my fasts break, so I am a bit curious about all you fanfic writers here on F!S; how many words do you usually write in a fanfic chapter?

I don;t know what authors do but as a reader (and this may vary), this is how chapter length effects what I read.

One shots no matter how long (I just read a 50.000 word one).
2-3 10.000 chapters for a completed story posted at once I will read.
A WIP of any chapter lengths I will read.
But if you post 20 chapters all at once of a completed story I have a hard time psyching myself up to read it. I don't know why, but it just happens.

It depends on the story! I try not to go below 4,000 words a chapter though--mostly because I don't like to read less than that for a chapter and I write to make myself happy. Generally my chapters are between 4k to 8k. I've written chapters that are 24k+ but I split them up when posting into 8k bits so it's less daunting for potential readers.

I can't really say why one story has longer chapters than another though. It just comes down to a gut feeling for me.

Enh, I think it depends. I do try not to go below 2500ish, but I very rarely 'chapter' things, so most of my fics range from 2000ish to up to 20k.

As a reader, I prefer to read something around 3-4k per chapter or more, because while anything under 1k seems way too short to me, I don't mind 2k or so if it's something that's updated regularly/consistently.
