At least she's not against fanfiction? Or took a fanfic and turned it into a best selling novel?

I believe there are other authors who started as fanfic writers. I don't see anything wrong with that. You're still honing your skills.

she used to be anti-fanfic, which was pretty hypocritical, but later relaxed her stance and said it's a good way to get into writing.

Really? Well then. At least she relaxed her stance, I guess? (And isn't Diana Gabaldon.)

Supposedly the anti-fanfic thing was all her editor's coaching, which would be nice if it's true.

It was a reaction to the MZB thing where a fanficcer managed to successfully contest copyright and gain a part of MZB's IP for themself because MZB was a bit soft on upholding her rights wrt fanwork. ML's editor and publisher didn't want her next on the list for something like that so they convinced her to go all guns blazing on anything that looked like fanworks.

Thank you! That's makes a lot of sense :)

I know about the MZB fanfic scandal, so thank you for clearing things up :)
thene: Naomi Hunter is very suspicious. (naomi)

This is not true. No fanficcer ever made such a legal contest at all, let alone a successful one.

Above anon is incorrect; she wasn't anti-fanfic but instead wanted to keep it all firmly corralled in an official fanzine, and said she didn't want anyone to be out there sharing fanfic in the normal fandom way. Needless to say the internet disagreed. A few years ago she publicly recanted her previous opinion due to pressure from Cory Doctorow. Now she says she's fine with people posting fanfic wherever, so long as anything above PG-13 is under wraps. The internet still disagrees.

Also fanficcers of her work have to agree to creative commons of their work or she shuts them down.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
that doesn't seem... terrible unreasonable to me?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Me either, it is just a legal way of saying what most fanficcers always say in their own disclaimers.

An anon above you also said it was in reflection of the MZB fanfic debacle. I'm starting to get a better picture of the whole ordeal. Thank you :)

Yeah, I've no doubt that was an influence as MZB's was one of the fandoms she wrote fic in. However, the Fanlore article on the topic makes it clear how much the MZB debacle was just hot air. (MZB was also a former fanfic writer, go figure.)

I have read the fanlore article for it! Ages ago tho. But thanks.

It seems a lot of all the inaccuracies stemmed from the internet and wires crossing (like how a lot of misunderstandings and problems happen on the net). It seemed to be a small situation that the internet made into a big one.

Didn't help that at one point inveterate spammer Mikela Ecks/Laura Hale was plastering an inaccurate version of the MZB thing all over the internet as a cautionary tale - seriously, I remember her randomly showing up on blog posts with it in ~2006. o_0 No idea why she did that. I'm honestly not sure if it was the internet that made a big deal of it, or just MZB herself with that later bizarre assist from Mikela Ecks.

At any rate, I find Lackey's whole stance both hypocritical and creepy; apart from the general ickiness of having a fanfic space where one is only supposed to participate for pay, that kind of IP control attempt conveniently puts her in a position to neuter the critical role of fanfic. I feel like fanfic being a peer space is important, and it has all kinds of implications for how fanfic writers communicate with each other, from exchanging kink prompts to ripping on canon in comment threads. So the thought of what Lackey wanted from fandom makes me feel kinda ill.
