At least in the book, the character is identified as Aspergers, I don't believe a lot of other characters people have named are specifically called out to have Aspergers.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)Like, he has all this behavioral programming that causes his demeanor to mostly not really reflect that of autistic people (to name one example, his impeccably genteel courtesy/thoughtfulness and adherence to uber-polite language outside of the whole "doesn't understand what an embarrassing question or TMI is" thing), but his inability to grasp certain ideas and behaviors and his attempts to figure them out are really nicely comparable to some autistic people's problems.

(I watched it on TV, but it disappeared. I recently saw it on Netflix.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)It's not exactly a comforting read, though, and it doesn't exactly spend the bulk of the story with the main character feeling not-defective, even if he does get there in the end.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)In my experience with her work, she tends to kind of overgeneralize a lot (and she occasionally falls into treating some kinds of autistic people as okay while framing others as defective), so while she's definitely worth tossing in I'd add others as well, like Daniel Tammet or Michelle Dawson or group-effort works like the Loud Hands Anthology or The Thinking Person's Guide to Autism.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)As a kid I loved the books, still do as an adult, but I don't have much interaction with autistic people so I don't know if Cat's a fair representation or not.
