why are nerds/fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So sexually deviant?

Genuinely interested. I hang out in more 'normal' places, even where people feel very free to talk about their innermost secrets and you don't see half the things you would on your average fandom/anime/gaming etc site.

I would guess they don't feel as free to talk about their innermost secrets as you're thinking, or else they haven't been exposed to the same ideas.

This. Most people who are into things that aren't...exactly what people consider standard don't usually feel free to talk about it unless they know the other person very, very well - or they know that person shares an interest in that. It's part of the reason the kink community isn't easy to find in a new city.

Also, you're average joe walking down the street is going to picture what the stereotypes of a specific kink are when thinking about instead of what it's actually like...and those stereotypes are usually pretty negative, so they're most likely not going to be interested in exploring them.

fandom is an echo chamber for unusual stuff, and it's been going on for a really long time. Once you enter, you might not know you're into "weird" sexual stuff, but you'll be exposed to it really quickly, and everyone around you will treat is as absolutely normal. You become desensitized to it, comfortable with it, realize that you enjoy some of it... So I don't think fandom people are actually more "deviant", they're just more used to exploring the devious sides of their interests.

Probably because the internet is a pretty good place to say things anonymously.

What normal places are you talking about? Mine would be the queer ones, resource and bars ones included, and folk are comfortable enough to discuss anything since part of the point is not to shy away from discussing everything while meeting new people.

Pretty much this.

Are you sure what's being shared is really their innermost secrets?

I think it's partly down to how we have a chance to lurk before speaking in fandom. Like, someone will see your posts, decide you might be cool to talk to, skim your profile, see if you fail any particular litmus tests etc, and only then make direct contact. This can lead to the development of some pretty amazing social bubbles. All it takes is for a few people to have the pseudononymous balls to mention their favourite hentai in their profiles, or post a kinky fic/artwork, and suddenly you've got a network of people who already know that the people they're talking to are at least open to certain crazy wild kinks. And because much of this communication goes on in public, even people who aren't originally 'deviant' (as you put it) get to have that as part of their social atmosphere. And then someone starts a kink meme and anyone of those outsider-people can go anon and get wrists-deep in some nasty, wrong shit if they feel like it. A lot of people will write/draw something they're not even that into just because they can think of a cool way to fill a prompt. So you can easily go from being not exposed to kink at all to having it be part of your social-creative life, all because of the magic of anonymity and public sexual expression. /coolstory

I don't think they're more deviant, just more open about it. I dabbled in the BDSM community and most were not nerdd, just kinky fuckers.

Because it makes them feel cool?

Nerds/fandom aren't more kinky than other people in my experience. They just tend to keep talking about it. Possibly because they feel insecure? There are a lot of potential reasons.

But no, being kinky doesn't make you special. Many people are kinky.

Also, normal people don't have kink memes where they bitch at people for not writing them porn of Batman pooping on Robin.

I think it's not so much that nerds and fandom types are necessarily more kinky, but nerds are so used to being judged by society for harmless interests that fandom culture tends to be more explicitly anti-judging (not that fans and fandom circles don't get judgey as fuck sometimes, but the terms "YKINMKATOK" and "kink-shaming" were coined for a reason). Anonymity (and pseudonymity) probably also helps.

Maybe it's because there's a lot of source material to pull from.
