Reviewing fic with annoying author's note?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-21 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read this very well done fic with an interesting premise you don't see so much on my fandom. I honestly enjoyed it, and was considering letting the author a review praising their good work until their author's note on the final chapter.

They wrote a comment on how they wrote the fic because they didn't like a thing the rest of the fandom is very well into (I'm very into it, nothing serious, only something that is not everybody's cup of tea). Their condescending tone really annoyed me, I mean was it really necessary? They could have ended the fic with a "I wanted to explore this rarely used concept in my story because we need more of this" and be done with it. The fact that he/she needed to bash the rest of the fandom seems of very poor taste to me, and persuade me from letting them a review.

Yes I know, my review is not something so special he/she's gonna suffer from the lack of it, but I also think that if he/she wants his/her interpretation of canon to get more attention, then he/she shouldn't go pissing off people who might have been willing to give it a chance just because of his/her lack of tact.

What about you, FS!? Have you not let a review on a otherwise good fic because of its author's notes?

leave your review with this

"Their condescending tone really annoyed me, I mean was it really necessary? The fact that he/she needed to bash the rest of the fandom seems of very poor taste to me, and persuade me from letting them a review."

As temtpting as that would be, no, I don't think that'd accomplish anything. That's why I preferred to come here and vent.

(You like to watch the world burn, don´t you?)

Let me guess. Teen Wolf fandom?

But I've done the same before too, not leaving reviews out of spite because of the author shitting on the fandom. Even if I agree with them, that a trend or fanon is terrible and annoying, they should keep that shit to themselves. Without others obviously enjoying a common idea, they wouldn't have made that fic in the first place since their apparent point is to show what a unique and varied individual they are.

If they do have to passive aggressively swat at the fandom, at least do that on a blog or forum or whatever, rather than throwing shade in your work.

Nope, it's from a smaller fandom (which I don't want to name to avoid stirring wank). I'm sorry to hear that happens in other fandoms too. :(

But yeah, I would not mind if they did that on a blog. Yes, I probably would still be annoyed, but I could just block the post or happily ignore it.

"Without others obviously enjoying a common idea, they wouldn't have made that fic in the first place since their apparent point is to show what a unique and varied individual they are."

Exactly, how could they feel all smug and superior if we didn't give them the chance? ;P

And, OMG, this sentence is precious, and the laugh made me feel a lot less angry, thank you so much, anon. <3

It definitely does go on in other fandoms - I was about to ask if this was from Avengers fandom. We've got one of those serious business jackasses there.

oh, oh, I know, I know!

leave them your normal review, but add something like "oh, I'm so glad that you're not like other authors that bash the fandom and complain about trends they don't like, you're so nice and sweet and an awesome writer" or something like that

because, I mean, what could they answer to that? "no, I'm not nice like you think I am and I hate [X]!"?

Haha, you know, this is not such a bad idea! And it might work to make them realize bitching like that accomplishes nothing...

(That is, unless they are one of those people who are blind to irony).

But yeah I might do that, thanks anon!

A problem could come from them not viewing their AN as bashing - or just flat out not remembering what they wrote in it.

usually passive-aggressive lines like that are super obviously passive-aggressive, and therefore sound more jerkish then a simple "btw your author's note was offputting." and if it does sound completely sincere, the author is probably not going to put 2+2 together and quit doing it.

it's a win-win anyway

they get it: what can the writer do? if they call op on being passive-aggressive, op can deny it since they technically said only good things. the hypocrisy would be delicious, since the writer started the passive-aggressive game, so op has a good laugh and then moves on

they don't get it: op has a good laugh and then moves on

Easy answer? Be PA back - it's actually not that hard if you're used to it.
thene: Naomi Hunter is very suspicious. (naomi)

This is kinda why opinionated author's notes should be avoided at all costs. It's sometimes a maturity litmus test, even; are you big enough to not insist on the last word? If you've got something more to say, save it for a comment response or a meta thread, ffs.

I tend to be pretty direct about stuff like that, at least as far as saying 'I disagree with you about x, x is awesome and doesn't need bashing' - I figure engagement beats pass-agg silence treatment stuff every time. Fandom doesn't need less commenting.

Yeah, I've definitely done this. I mean I'll still leave kudos for the fic (if it's on AO3 obviously), but that kind of thing leaves such a bad taste in my mouth, even when I agree with the sentiment (which I actually tend to do? I'm usually kind of an outlier w/r/t fandom trends, but I don't make a big deal out of it and just write what I like etc, etc).

Sadly it's on FF.net. But yours is the right attitude to do, just write what you want to read, and there's always someone who will like it.

It's the passive-agressive attitude that I can't stand.
