Internship advice?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2013-07-21 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
While I know that asking what amounts to as a room of relative strangers for life advice is kind of a risky move, I'm a little bit desperate right now, so I'm trying everything I know.

I'm a grad student, and my final semester is this upcoming Fall. I have to do an internship for my final course requirement, and it's come down to roughly two choices. They're both far from ideal, but with only a month until school starts, I don't have much choice.

One of them would require me relocating about the length of the state away, and I would have to ditch my current apartment (that I signed a renewed lease for in May), and get a new apartment in the new town. But, the rent would be cheaper, I'm familiar with the town and the work environment (my undergrad college), and I've had experience in that work field (teaching). Plus, I love the place. I wouldn't be getting paid, but there's a chance I could get an adjunct position afterwards. My contact professor is offering me free board at her house in exchange for housework, but.... it doesn't feel right to me.

The second one is within an hour's commuting distance from my current apartment by city bus, and has a pretty prestigious reputation. But, I am unfamiliar with the university and the work (reseacher for communications projects, which only done in class), and there's almost no chance of getting a work position there after I'm done, and I'm not getting paid for this job. But I may get a job in a nearby college.

Other things I'm worried about is access to amenities (current city has loads of easily accessible stuff, the other town is very rural without a whole lot), but on the flip side, the town is much safer and quieter than my current city.

So I'm torn. I love my old university, and the internship offer, but the amount of time and effort for as little pay off as I would get for moving there is disheartening.

What do you guys think?

I think...you should weigh the pros and cons, and decide which one you would ultimately be happier with.

That said, as a tip if you decide on the one you'd have to move with - try subleasing your current apartment in that case.

Not to sound incredibly dense, but since this is only the 2nd apartment I've ever rented, what is subleasing? It sounds like it might be vaguely illegal?

It depends on your lease actually, but it's basically where, if you aren't going to be living there the entire length of the lease, you find someone else to live there and pay rent. The specifics might change, but that's the basic concept [and some places actually require you to do it.]

Forgot to mention--

The teaching job would allow me to refine my language skills (I would be teaching French and Arabic at the college level), which would be great for my future jobs, which are very language heavy.

The other job would not, but it would build my skills as a researcher, although that's not what I would be doing as a future job.

I would go for the teaching job personally, since it looks like the only downside is the fact you renewed your lease, and leases are fairly easy to get out of, if it comes to that. All you really have to do is talk to your landlord, be upfront about the fact that you know it's an inconvenience for them, and then offer to let them keep your deposit as a fine of sorts. Most landlords understand, and considering you said you renewed your lease, you've lived there long enough that your landlord will probably let you out without a fuss. (Source: my own experience with leases)

Other than that, how rural is this new place you'd be relocating to?

I will give you the same advise people give me, do what is best for your future career. If one job gives you are better career option (in the long run) than the other, take that one. It all depends on what you want to do with the rest of your life, and you should choose according to that, not what will make your life easier or better the next couple of years, but the rest of your life. Where will you be happy? What kind of job do you see yourself doing in 10 years time? Do you plan on studying more? Is it more important to get a more prestigious internship, or something that is more relevant to your interests?

Make a pro/con list for both and see what you come up with, and I am sure you will have a great time whichever you choose!

Personally, I would definitely write out a list pros and cons, but in the end it should relate to which one will get you the better job prospects. Knowing how tough the job market is, you want to have a better foot than others who would be applying for similar jobs.

Best of luck!

I think you should stick with the one that's more likely to be job-relevant, not least because unpaid internships do not help people find jobs, as a rule, so anything that gives you even a slight edge over that miserable average is gonna help.
