What the anon above me said, with the elaboration that Picard is kind of the main person who teaches Data about how humans behave, about what various specific human actions convey which various specific meanings, and what kinds of things are appropriate/encouraged in what kinds of relationships.

Because Data has no instinctive idea of how humans are supposed to behave towards one another to indicate their feelings, but he really really really wants to act like a proper human, please his friends, and trusts Picard's advice about how to behave like a human pretty much unquestioningly.

Think about that for a while, and red flags start popping up ;)

I feel ya. I try really, really hard to be open about other people's ships, but man, there are a few out there that actually make me physically sick. And that's just not cool. But it is what it is.

I feel ya. I never really gave any thought to this pairing, but it seems really (really really) incestuous. I don't know. Picard was just so his father. Er.

Are you the anon who was talking to me in the GC about emotional power imbalances? Because they mentioned this ship as falling into a catagory I described at the time.

Personally, I don't ship it because it seems like he is too much of a father figure for my taste. But if someone else ships it? Do you know how I would feel about it? I wouldn't. I don't care.

So, OP, I don't think it's horrible you hate the ship and find it extremely unpalatable. In fact, it shows growth that you can now understand that not liking a ship doesn't mean you're immature. Now you just have to make sure that you don't cast hate on the shippers of the ship you hate because that is immature. Honestly this whole conversation is about recognizing people think, feel, and act differently from you. Well, surprise.

Haha, of all the pairings in all the fandoms, Picard/Data is the one that hits your squick buttons the most? Really?

I always thought that hating a pairing was silly, and only happened because the fan was too immature to bear threats to their One True Pairing. Otherwise it's just a story, right?

Then I realized this pairing exists. It makes my skin crawl just to think about it. I'm actually kind of bothered by how deeply the ship bothers me.

Wow, this is weird. I was just talking about how I can't read fics for this pairing here a few days ago O.o I don't mind at all that the pairing exists though, just that I personally can't read fics of them.

That's exactly how I felt about McKeller from SGA. It is a physical reaction, the dislike is so strong.

Any particular reason other than just gut feeling? I don't remember anything skeevy about it from a emotional power imbalance or other squick factor POV.

I just hated it because it blocked my OTP Weller (Weir/Keller) LOL, nah. You know what I mean.

The characters are pretty similar so maybe it's the bro/sis vibe. I thought they might be funny as brother & sister (they're so whiny and neurotic).

Why this pairing in particular as opposed to Picard/anyone else of lower rank?

I'd never even considered Picard/Data as a ship until it was brought up a few days ago but it doesn't bother me, I don't ship it but I'm also not really surprised? I mean people will ship anything(myself included) so I just kind of shrugged and moved along. But there is nothing wrong with finding a ship off-putting, not everyone is going to like the same things after all.

But why do you care? You don't even have to go remotely near it?

Fully agreed on the principle; with me it's a particular threesome that skeeves me out similarly.

Yeeeeaaah... Now that I think on it, that particular pairing wierds me out a bit. In fact any pairing with Data wierds me out, for all the reasons others have said, plus the point that with him not having any emotions for most of the TV series, it just feels like the human is trying to romance an overly complex doll.

There are other pairings that I have run across at time that I have reacted similar to that, but never because I felt threatened, but because I didn't like the dynamic involved in the pairing.
