Non-guilty pleasures?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
inspired by secret #3. Do you have any fannish interests (as in shows/games you like, fandom activity etc) you don't consider guilty pleasures? (Or amy I the only one with max levels of nerd shame?)

Yeah? Most games and shows I'll admit to *liking* - I just won't admit [openly at least] that I'm in it's fandom.

I unironically enjoy Call of Duty and have defended it from people who largely dislike it because it's popular.

Same. I don't play as much as I used to, but I love the games.

I like COD too and only play it for the campaign which sounds lame but whatever.

I don't have any guilty pleasures either. If I watch, read or listen to it, I have no problem owning up to it. And I have no problem defending it if I get any side eye.

Not really. If I read it, watch it, or play it, I'm probably talking about it with someone.

Hrm. I mean, my friends and siblings (not my parents for the most part) know that I am into reading fanfiction and fandom things. Most of my friends and siblings even know my tumblr. So most of mine? Except the porn. We don't talk about the fanart/fanfic porn.

Most of the stuff I like I make no excuses about liking it, but I am trying to un-guilt my love for my and other people's fan-characters, and the idea of fan-characters in general (as awry as it sometimes goes; but that's part of the fun for me)

I can't think of anything I WOULD call a guilty pleasure so.. take your pick. Also I'm really only active in one fandom, and don't really feel shame about it?

Pretty much every "geeky" thing I like. Go ahead and judge me, people irl. I like all kinds of sci-fi and stupid movies and all sorts of things that would consider very nerdy. Whatever. How you gonna find people who the same things if you don't talk about the things you love?

I don't think I have any shows or series that I'm ashamed to like or actively keep secret IRL. I don't usually bring them outside of relevant context or general icebreaker questions. Well, I have fandom TV shirts, computer stickers/backgrounds, ringtones, etc, which technically count as blaring my interests to the world. But most the time I let other people bring them up first.

As for specific fannish activity, I don't usually admit that I have written (and still write) fanfic. I'll only match it if the person admits that they either used to or still read/write fanfic. Same goes with in-depth fandom discussion and belonging to communities like f!s.

I think tumblr's gone a long way in sort of bridging the gap between casual and hardcore fan. Like I've met several people IRL now who mention they reblog stuff on tumblr and buy some merchandise, but that's the extent of their fandom adventures. One of them admitted they used to write a bunch of Draco/Harry slash, but then talked of pretty much all fanfic as if it was a juvenile hobby that everyone was supposed to outgrow. My sister's pretty much the same way, although she was never super into online fandom to begin with. She used to draw a bunch and write self-insert fic in her physical notebooks, and she viewed/read a bunch of other people's stuff online, but she never actually contributed any of her own stuff online... at least, not to my knowledge...

Pretty much all of them are non-guilty pleasures. I might feel a bit embarrassed that I still play pokemon sometimes, but that's it.

Depends on who I'm around too.

There's lots of things that I don't talk about but that's usually because I know no one I know gives a shit about them, not because I'm ashamed of them

I don't consider any of my fandoms guilty pleasures.

I don't enter the fandom of things that aren't in some way a guilty pleasure for me - not that I'm dissing my fandoms. It's just the source material has to represent a certain level of cheesy escapism for me to want to read fic for it.

I'll freely talk about liking pretty much any comic/game/book/whatever I'm into. (Though I'll be more reticent if it's something that's perceived as girly or something that I like for (literal) gay reasons.) But I generally won't admit to reading or writing fanfiction, and certainly not to being a huge shipper.

I'm not sure I have "guilty" pleasures at this point o_O I'm not really ashamed of what I like, as far as fandom goes. I mean, it's not like I go on about my favorite shows, but...one of my coworkers has all sorts of nerdy/fannish stickers on her car, and another plays D&D and has a few fannish tattoos (Futurama and Transformers, as far as I can tell), and two others are tumblrites. I'm pretty much in good company here XD

But yeah, I'll totally admit to being into Free! and MLP and WoW and whatever else. Ain't no shame in my game~!

Sometimes I'll secretly feel guilty for enjoying something, but luckily I have awesome friends who know that enjoyable needn't equal good and we don't judge each other, so even if it is kind of a guilty pleasure, I rarely keep anything I watch/play a secret from people.

The only things that I mark with the label "guilty pleasures" are older bits of media that have content that would have been seen as okay in their own time but are clearly sexist/racist/homophobic now. Example: Short Circuit and its one ridiculous brownface character; I otherwise love the movie, but that character and his overplayed accent are nine kinds of problematic, so it's a guilty pleasure for me. Media from the '60s (old!Who, certain episodes of the Monkees, etc.) are especially bad about this.
