Your clothes and fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Does fandom influence anyone else's clothing choices? If I like a character (or just like their style) I'll often end up picking clothes in similar colors to theirs, or in a similar style (if they aren't a regular person from this time period, it'll be more like "what would they wear if they had to wear normal human clothes/lived in this time period").

Maybe it's copying someone's style or whatever, but it makes shopping for clothes more fun and keeps me from wearing boring jeans and shirts all the time. I don't think it's ever noticeable - it's not like I'm actually dressing AS the character or anything.

(obviously I'm talking about regular clothes and not cosplay)

Sometimes, if I see a style of dressing I like I'll add elements into my own wardrobe...but that's about as far as it goes.

Apart from secretly pretending I'm a Winchester whenever I wear a flannel shirt, no. But that doesn't mean I don't take inspiration from characters in my fandom - I really like Lydia and Alison's fashion sense in Teen Wolf, for instance. And sometimes I do try to dress like Zooey Deschanel because all her clothes are ridiculously cute don't judge me

So not judging you, we've all got our dirty secrets :P Mine is that Taylor Swift may be a horrible person, but her sense of fashion is fucking flawless and I'd gladly switch my wardrobe with hers.

AYRT
Taylor does have amazing style too, dammit. Unfortunately I can't rock the loose top/skinny pants look because I'm more pear-y like Zooey, but I love all the boat necked tops and a-line skirts she rocks. And her coats, my god her coats. Also I like how Taylor is tall and Zooey is tallish (about my height), because it makes it easier to judge whether an outfit is going to work - nothing is worse than picking out an adorable skirt or dress or top that looks great on your 5'3 friend and realising it is positively indecent on you, and not in a good way. /tangential rant

Sometimes, but usually it works the other way around: I get interested in characters because 'hey, that's something I'd totally wear'. Bonus points if the aesthetics of the series/comic/whatever is a pleasing one. Shallow anon is shallow, I know ._.

Not really. I will happily buy fandom shirts, but that's it. I don't care too much about appearance one way or the other.

I used to cosplay Amy Pond and have ended up using some of her pieces as day to day wear. No reason why I shouldn't get my money's worth out of them when they're normal clothes, same as anything else.

...Sort of? Every once in a while, depends on the character I'm really into at the moment. And if I thought their style would be at all like mine to begin with. Like you said, it's along the lines of 'what would they wear as everyday clothing' or 'which pair of jeans would character x go for?' Can be fun.

I wear Dean's necklace from Supernatural daily (and the odd assorted fandom t-shirt) but that's about it.

I'm only a little bit ashamed to admit that in putting together my college wardrobe my biggest inspiration has been India Stoker's magnificent preppy-and-classic--yet-slightly-gothic ensembles.

I do whatever I can to dress like Joan Holloway, or I buy pieces that remind me of her. She's such a strong female character with great intelligence and fortitude that I use her as my fashion role model for a confidence boost.

On the other hand, I wear my Jake and Amir tee shirt when I'm feeling carefree and silly.

Yes. Sometimes really a lot.
When I was about 13-15 I started dressing all in black because a book I was fond of featured a master thief dressed all in black. He was my favourite character. People kept thinking I was a goth or something and I never really corrected them because what could I have told them? "Nah, I'm not a goth, I just idolise cat burglars!".

But I still do this sometimes in a way very similar to what OP decribes. Of course I only do it if it's a style I actually like. For example: My fondness for uniform-styled clothing really works well with my obsession with some military themed Sci-Fi and Navy-related fandoms. But I also sometimes buy clothes (mostly accessories, though) only because I want to wear them as tributes to certain characters I really like. But it's not in a way anyone would notice except for me. But it's a lot of fun dressing for certain "character" or "fandom" themes.

No, but I have pieces of clothing that reminds me of characters, but I don't buy them for that reason, mostly it is because I dress formally and characters I love usually do the same,

When you don't own jeans and either use suit trousers (and/or waistcoats) or dresses, coupled with classic coats and pretty generic shoes (converse, high heels and boots), you are bond to look like a female Sherlock Holmes or The Doctor, though I sometimes apparently dress a bit like Amy Pond.

A couple of years ago my winter coat was quite similar to Capt. Jack Harkness, but that was a complete coincidence and I did not notice it before a friend mentioned it...

My style is probably somewhat inspired by television and film, but whose isn't?

I like to wear fandom-related t-shirts and accessories but it never occurred to me to try copying a character's style...I'm not sure how well that would work for the fandoms I'm in, anyway :P

Not really..? I guess when I was really into anime back then I was really into some light gyaru stuff but having to wear falsies and trying to look made up all the time is a pain in the ass. I wear pretty casual stuff now.

Maybe? I know I tend to wear granddad clothes and look incredible after being inundated by photos of tumblr folks' crush of the moment. It's confusing.

I admit I'm a fan of fandom t-shirts. Not the type with the logo all over, but the type (usually from cons or ript) that advertise something in-series.

Right now I'm wearing one that advertises Junes, a chain store from Persona 4.
