I don't think you're supposed to. It's about people whose main and sometimes only contact with fandom is through a language that isn't their mother tongue.

Non-English fandoms are much smaller and fewer so you often have to brush up on your English, but once you go there, it's difficult to read fic again in your native language; because it sounds a bit strange. I can't really explain it...

I understand the secret, but it makes me wish there were a large cache of Spanish fanfics for all my favorite fandoms because apparently it would really help my vocabulary! (Seriously. that would be really awesome.)

I remember one time reading a CLAMP novel that had been translated to English. I loved CLAMP, and can't read Japanese, but I couldn't read the English translation at all. I have no idea if it was just a bad translation or what (I've never had issues watching subbed anime or translated manga, it was just that novel, though I do have trouble watching dubbed anime). I wonder if it's even remotely the same...
