I'm exactly the same, down to the vocabulary in school part. My native language is so small that fandom is more or less non-existent, but shyeah, I shudder to imagine Hobbit smut or HP shotafic that's *not* in English.

It's the same for me, too! Except for how I didn't have access to (english language) fandom until after school. (dammit.)

Anyway, it's weird, especially when I try to read smut.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, so true. I couldn't even read my own fic that someone had taken the trouble to translate into my mother tongue. It was a good translation but I'm just like, "Argh, no, it burns!"

Me too, OP. It gives me some sort of weird second-hand embarrassment I can't even explain. But my English vocabulary has expanded because of all the fics I've read. Thank you, fic writers.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, me too. It's stupid but yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems to be widespread amongst ESL fans (myself included). I blame the fact that when I first read a fic in my language, it was the worst Mary Sue crapfest I've ever encountered. And I'm not exaggerating. Even awful-on-purpose fics, or truly cringeworthy badfics, have never reached that sort of 'fuck NO' sort of instinctual rejection that this one caused.

English is my first language, so I don't understand?

[Picture is the story submitting form from the website "Archive Of Our Own". It shows a list of languages.]

I can't read fanfiction in my native language. I'm so used to English that when I try I cringe and quickly nope out of there.
Bonus secret: My wide English vocabulary everyone was so impressed about in school? Yeah, that's from reading fanfiction.

I can't read fic in my native language either, but it's not because I'm so used to English, since I've read fanfic in a few other languages. So I'm not sure what my problem is... Except they usually use a vocabulary for sex that I find really cringe-worthy and/or a dialect or slang I just can't picture the characters using.

Only fic in my native language I read whole was a birthday gift from my friend. I just don't want to know some things in language I speak and hear everyday.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LITERALLY SAME. And on a related note, I once tried reading published erotica in my first language (by an author from my country, not translated) that won some sort of literary erotica award or w/e and I had to give up 50 pages in because I couldn't take it. My language just isn't fit for writing porn; the "proper" words sound too clinical and the slang words too crass and we don't really have anything in between so whatever you use it ends up sounding awkward as fuck.

Same. I have it to a point where I cringe every time I watch TV (in my country, even the simplest words like "Thanks" or "Goodbye" are dubbed).

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
English is my native language, but I like to read fic in Spanish sometimes. I started doing it because I couldn't find fic for certain pairings in English, but then I realized that almost all the Spanish fic I read is enjoyable to me because my grasp on the language is such that I can't always tell if the writing is poor or clichéd.

Same. A friend also writes fic in my native language, and she let me read it and it's just....weird. Though I have most of my vocabulary from CBBC.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have never been able to understand this and I'm a ESL too.

I can get not minding some words in a foreign language (hence finding smut less embarrassing to read, for example) and even being able to enjoy something more if you can't notice grammar/typing mistakes, but that's it.

For me, each language has its charm and is the way people use it that can make something cringe worthy or not.

Same with me; I can barely read any fanfiction if it's in Malay.

I barely read anything in Norwegian, but I think it is down to habit mostly, because Norwegian isn't that bad of a language vocabulary vise.

Except when it comes to porn, I could never read porn in Norwegian, it probably goes back to reading The Earth Children's series as a kid in Norwegian... Or the fact that I am surprisingly unopen about sex, and I have a problem saying the words in either language, though I am worse in Norwegian, the proper words are really clinical and the slang words are just rude...

Edit: I am also not a big fan of translating books into Norwegian though I understand why it is done, I just refuse to read it in Norwegian if it is originally written in English. The voices of film/television characters are also wrong if it is translated into Norwegian.

I do think in English when it is originally in English and Norwegian for everything else, so?

Same.

Ugh, yes. Especially porn. I just can´t read it in Spanish, it sounds too vulgar or too corny.

Also, I don´t like the use of slang words (boludo, wey, guay) from each country. Unless it´s written in standard Spanish, I feel like I´m reading a bad translation, like a bad dubbed movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if I watch a TV show in English, it sounds weird and unnatural when the characters speak my language in a fic. And now I watch mostly everything in English, if it's possible (as for books - not so often).
What's interesting though, is that I feel huge second-hand embarrassment when I try fanfic porn or erotic literature in my mother tongue, but I do like corny, vulgar "original" porn, and I do get off on talking dirty in my language (though still feel a little bit embarrassed).

I feel the same. Fan-fictions in French sound so weird, and if there's porn inside, mwahaa!

I think one reason dialogs : usually fic characters are not French and are supposed to speak in their native language. It doesn't bother me too much in dubbed movies / series - though I prefer subtitled -. But in written form, it usually comes out weird. Maybe it's just that writers aren't that good with dialog.

Same, to an extent. I am billingual French/German, and while I can read Fanfic in French, fanfic in German just makes me cringe for some reason.
Maybe it's an exposure to fandom thing? My early fandom days (i.e. when my English skills were pretty sub-par) were in French, while when my (then) main fandoms (manga/anime) became popular in the German speaking world, I was already dwelling in the parts of fandom in English and never really went that route.
