Re: Is Pacific Rim sexist

There's only one female character but I would say she's pretty unambiguously bad-ass and well-done and not pander-y or compromised or anything like that.

So it's not the best thing (because there's only one real female character) but I don't think its depiction of that female character is sexist or anything other than pretty good.

This. I don't really have anything to add.

But it's not as bad as the link was making it out? 'cause if this girl is badass awesome and gets at least some decent screen time I think I will be happy (provided they're not uber sexualising her but it looks like they wear robot suits all the time?)

I was getting really excited and now I'm kinda nervous/concerned

I actually just read that link and wrote a big long thing a few threads down, haha. So, uh, yeah. That's what I think about that.

But no, I don't think it's as bad as the link was making out. And she's definitely not uber-sexualized or anything like that.

It's not as bad as that tumblr post says, no. Yes, she's really the only female character. Yes, she's very important to the plot. No, she's not sexualized (at all really). There isn't really a love story. She faints for a legit, plot related reason.

See the movie for yourself. It's awesome and completely ridiculous and cheesy (and not "dudebro" at all).

I will be seeing it in 9 hours! I'm kinda expecting ridculousness and cheesiness as that's what it's being marketed as, as a bit of fun. But aside from the appalling lack of female characters (just a little bit over the men), it looks like loads of fun with robots and water alien monsters
