RPF can become really twisted, really fast. Look at the J2 fandom. They are so convinced that those actors are gay for each other IRL, that they make up elaborate conspiracy theories about their wives and babies being 'beards', and harass them at cons and whatnot. Just because they thought Sam and Dean were tehhawtsomgpantieswettttttt together. Which is really creepy as all get out, you know

I'm normally the last person to stick up for SPN/J2 fandom, but the tinhatters really are a loud minority. I don't disagree that RPF can take a turn for the wrongbadcreepy really quickly, but I also feel uncomfortable lumping them in as some monolith when the majority of those I know are just like "hay, two hot dudes I can write AUs about", which is more... putting a face on some semi-original fic than it is creepin' on the guys' real lives.

There's a ton of coms for them, though. They've been featured on Fandom Wank a few times, and I've skimmed through hundreds upon hundreds of comments like: "Ew (insert wife here) looks like a fat horse! She's taking him away from his twu wuvvvvvv!" "How dare she pretend that she had sex with (insert either actor here)!" "OMG, how could they bring a baby into this charade!? It MUST be the bodyguard's baby, and she's forcing him to pretend it's really his!!" And so, so much worse.

There's a second baby on the way for Jared, so shit is about to hit the fan again from them.

Oh, yeah. I mean, I guess when I say they're a vocal minority, I mean that they are very, very, very vocal. And creepy. And just, idk, MEAN. It's sort of ridiculous (though I'm starting to wonder how many of them just embrace the crazy and do it on purpose).

Idk, I was in a comm like this for a while (not explicitly for shipping, just for ridiculousness), and from a loooooot of those people I got the vibe that they were just nutty on purpose? Some were gross, and their comments about the wives (who were at the time just girlfriends) were what eventually ran me off, but that "I can't tell if serious or..." vibe never quite left me.

Some of the legit tinhatters have far outpaced Domlijah fans, though. I just can't tell the trolls from the real ones most of the time, and then I see other SPN/J2 fans side-eyeing the fuck out of them, and I almost feel sorry for the fandom and the bad rap it gets.

I'm not that sure that the tinhatters are RPS fans. IT hink that they're a completely different brand of absolutely batshit insane.

However, if that's your only brush with an RPS fandom... I can totally understand why you think we're all creepy.

I'mma need someone to do a typology of RPS fans now. For science.

From an SPN perspective, we have, in order from most to least creepy:

- The Tin-Hatter, convinced it's real and any evidence and marriages to the contrary are part of a cover-up.
- The Public-Personas-As-Characters-Shipper, who is treating public appearances as a sort of canon from which fic (missing scenes fic, yo) and meta may be derived. Sometimes involves non-famous people.
- The AUer - While maintaining very basic traits of public personas, and sometimes part of their life stories, creates original stories that are clearly fabrications.
- The Fuck-It, That's Pretty Fan - Have abandoned all pretense that this has anything to do with anything other than the actors' looks. Lengthy AUs with original characterisations usually fall here.

Bless you, anon. Now to get some combined qual/quant data that determines statistical prevalence of each of these types...
