Could someone explain what's so great about The Avengers?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I watched it recently and was incredibly underwhelmed. To me it was essentially another generic action/superhero film with a couple of clever lines, mostly thanks to Tony Stark (pretty much the only enjoyable part of the film for me), but basically nothing interesting or special. I don't really get it.

That said, I'm not a superhero fan at all (though I enjoy some action films--usually sci-fi), so maybe it's just a genre I can't get into. I love lots of genres that aren't considered to be that great so I get it that sometimes people just don't get into it. But the hype was so widespread I figured this was a film that would appeal to basically everyone.

As compared to other action movies, which do not contain any hot guys or ass...?

I'm just a casual fan, but it was fun to watch and I liked all the CGI monsters. Stark has pretty eyes, there were some nice one liners and the fandom is so good, I can always find me some good porn ;)

Explosions, Black Widow was pretty awesome. Yeah it was fun C:

I liked what they set up with Black Widow but she didn't get enough of a story. I'd much rather watch a film about her than the others, to be honest. Or maybe I need to watch Iron Man if he's as funny as he was in The Avengers.

I was p. happy, but then I have no interest in the lead up movies and less interest in comics. Well I saw IM3 out of context and that was cool. A Black widow one would be cool.

Dunno if I'll see Avengers 2 though, might wait to see what my friends say haha.

Sorry I'm such a casual ~shallow~ movie fan haha. My review: yeah it was fun to watch. Looked good on the screen.

It was fun and had some funny lines.

I love superheroes teaming up, and while there's been some great superhero movies, not so much superhero team movies. (Oh, Fantastic Four, you coulda been great) To finally have a superhero team done RIGHT was totally geekgasmic for me.

I will admit that The Incredibles is the best superhero team movie.

It's just a fun movie that tosses (a lot of) peoples' fav superheros together. I don't think it's brilliant, but it makes me smile, and I like seeing the everyone interacting.

Also, everyone is very good looking. I love me some eye candy /no shame.

I love it because I love superheroes and superhero films in general(I usually find something enjoyable about all of them bar a few exceptions) and as I had really enjoyed all of the lead up films Avengers was the culmination of all of those years of build-up and my fannish brain was in heaven.

Also lots of pretty people.

It really helps if you've seen the previous movies in the franchise. The Avengers was an ensemble piece that referenced a lot of previous canon, and in ensemble pieces, each character gets less development than they would in their own movie. Having seen all the previous MCU movies before Avengers, a lot of the appeal was in seeing characters I already loved interact with and bounce off of each other. Certainly the writing was also pretty fantastic and Natasha was made of awesome, but I suspect I would've enjoyed it a lot less if I'd come into it cold.

I hadn't seen any of the previous movies, so I got a 15 minute summary from one of my friends as we waited for it to start, and I still loved it, but the second time I saw it, after I'd seen most of the other movies (still need to see Thor) I liked it even more.

I watched the other films before The Avengers except for the Hulk and was as underwhelmed as the OP. And Bruce was one of my favorites in The Avengers, actually! Him and Tony.

The writing did seem a bit too "this is cool we're cool COME ON LIKE THIS", though. Like, they were going through the motions of what a "cool movie" is supposed to seem like, or something? I don't know how to explain it. The way fandom talked it up I was expecting something... better than just slightly above average, I guess.

It was only saved from being utterly obnoxious by having such fantastic actors. I try to imagine less capable actors following the script and saying those "witty" one-liners and banter and I cringe.

I suspect that you and I have very different opinions of what constitutes good dialogue and good movies (and many other things, as Bruce actually kind of annoyed me in Avengers), because I didn't think that Avengers was try-hard or had air-quotes "witty" dialogue. You probably just want different things out of a movie than Avengers fans do, which doesn't mean that either Avengers or whatever movies you like are bad; it's just a matter of tastes.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much exactly how I felt. Every big action scene just looked like "hey look how cool and epic these guys are (oh right and there's a girl)" and it felt so hollow. The villain was hardly a threat during the whole film, and then it was basically just disaster porn New York style with a few funny quips here and there.

I guess it was fun for people who already liked all these characters, and seeing them come together and everything.

It was great seeing them all in one film, especially if you're fan of at least a few of the characters. Tony Stark stole the show, but overall I liked many of the lines and interactions, though I guess that's what I normally like about Joss Whedon's stuff. If you're not a superhero fan that... probably doesn't help considering you have a whole pile of them in one movie.

I enjoyed it because it had better character development than your typical action flick, but it was ultimately too "white boys with token girl who doesn't get her own movie" for me to really love it.

Agreed. And the announcement then quick shelving of the Black Widow movie really didn't help.

It might have just been an action movie, but it was an exceedingly well-done one. All the cast had chemistry with at least someone (Ruffalo being the surprise find of this movie) and it was about superheroes being super but with problems. It was also an origin story, which usually have more fans that sequels. The dialogue was well-written, and it tied the other films together, which made it the first of its kind for this sort of thing (a success DC is going to try really hard to duplicate.) The fandom is also awesome, and there's really something for everyone.

All that aside? You waited too long, and hype ruins things. Had you seen it in theaters and in its peak period, you probably would have liked it more.

I'm with you, OP. (I saw it just a month ago.) It just tried too hard.

I'm actually relieved I didn't spend that money on movie theater tickets, despite my earlier disappointment at being unable to watch it when it came out. I would have felt cheated out of my money and baffled at all the hype rather than just excited and eager to join in too.

I think it's a relatively well-written movie that tied together four different movie series' into one movie, which is interesting. It's a lot of fun to watch, it has good humor, and is overall pretty entertaining.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It was a fun movie with some really nice special effects, but that's about it. I don't feel pulled into the fandom or carried away with the sheer amount of awesomeness it contains.
