Pacific rim anon one last time

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m commenting in the GC one last time which means I LIKED IT cause I’m not making a secret ;)
In regards to the sexism that I was worried would ruin it for me (according to the few posts I had seen)

- The only bit that stood out to me particularly was that out of all the main and secondary characters we had two girls
- I don’t recall any in the background characters except for the one asian lady in the ?bunker?
- So that annoyed me a bit

I had no problems with the “fainting” or that the commander wouldn’t let her pilot. I think that had way less to do with her gender and more to do with their particular relationship

Characterwise, Mako was my favourite. I mixed the three blond dudes up an awful lot because they looked the same which was jfc annoying. At least the (bad) aussie accents, helped differentiate

I really liked the different kaiju and the cgi involved.

It was nice having the base location somewhere other than America/that goddamn statue. Made it more new/fresh looking

Tl;dr I LOVED IT. THE GRAPHICS WERE GREAT. THE MUSIC WAS GREAT. THE ROBOTS WERE GREAT, THE MONSTERS WERE GREAT, SOUND WAS GREAT, the story line was so-so but I was there for the action, 3D cgi and battles. THE WORLDBUILDING WAS AWESOME THO
*ORDERS ART BOOK*

Yes! I'm really glad to hear you liked it. Wasn't it GREAT?! Wasn't it so much fun? And Mako! And the robots! and the scene with the sword!

I agree that there could have been more female characters but I enjoyed it so much, and Mako was so awesome, that it's hard to let that bother me. God, it kicked ass.

I think in the end it was 5 main chars and the 2 comedic relief, so out of that only 1 girl is >:( So everytime I think about it I get annoyed.

The sword was very unexpected and exactly what I wanted in this kinda of big ass fighting movie XD

It was big and cheesy and fun, like pizza in movie form.

YES it was a big satisfying pizza of explosions! Would watch again, maybe not on a $26 cinema. Might just buy the DVD XD

Congrats, you have way better comprehension skills than whoever wrote that critique.

Re: Pacific rim anon one last time

(Anonymous) 2013-07-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Also - the guy who wrote that critique came off like an asshole. Just looking at his web presence and writing style, he just seemed very... unpleasant.

Yeah, it helps not to be a blowhard too :/ I imagine he's those kind of people who try to sound smart all the time and ends up grasping at straws to make the first negative commentary.

Cuz it's only valid commentary if it's negative criticism! /sarcasm

Re: Pacific rim anon one last time

OP

Yeah I was pretty baffled because he was the only person I'd seen who hadn't liked it, but then the usual people who I follow with info on things like that hadn't seen it? So I wasn't sure if it was just real issues (tm) being shuttled off to the side or something more tiringly cliche/annoying.

But no, the things he didn't like fitted in with the story well. Granted it's not a super amazing/original story but it was nice, neat, simple and fitted together.

Bit disappointed in the posts, but then I'm following him for his art resources and interesting takes on dinosaurs - not movie reviews XD

I'm glad FS convinced me to go. I really did love it! Can't wait for the DVD come out, I bet the making of's and background info will be great

I'm glad you loved it, anon!

AND THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME THAT I WANTED TO ORDER THAT ART BOOK TOO AHHHH <3

Glad you liked it overall. I had the same reaction as you, even down to confusing the three white dudes up. When we first saw the Australian son dude on the TV even my mom turned to me and said, "I thought the brother died?" And then I was like, maybe he didn't die and this is him on the wall as his brother lives it up. But no, the brother was dead. Took me a few minutes but I got it.

Just, too many blond dudes with blocky builds and stubble. Ergo they all looked the same XD I don't even remember any of their names, it was just aussie-dad, asshole son, main dude and dead brother.

Pretty much, yeah. I was able to tell Aussie dad apart simply because his face was the most different.

The only person whose name I remember is Mako.

I could tell them apart but then I did recognise the Aussie dad from something and the Aussie son was an Eastenders actor otherwise I might have had some trouble, they were very similar.

I was able to tell Aussie dad apart for some reason but the others I wasn't for the first few minutes. I got the hang of it pretty quickly, about five minutes after Aussie son was introduced.

I get the brothers looking the same because their brothers but unrelated people probably shouldn't. Couldn't they have bleached someone's hair or given them a fake tattoo on their face? Something?

I am super glad I wasn't the only person with this problem though. Thanks for letting me know.

The thing is that you were meant to confuse Raleigh (white main) and Chuck (young Aussie.) Chuck is a direct parallel of who Raleigh was before *spoiler* the death of his brother. They could have been twins, except when it came right down to it, Raleigh had experienced enough to change. Chuck didn't get a chance to.

/one of my favorite parts in the movie

That went right over my head, but I get what you mean

Oh that's a nice touch :o

Re: Pacific rim anon one last time

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but the problem with that kind of lookalike symbolism is that it's hard to see it if you spend the rest of the movie wonder who's on screen, without solid and distinct enough characterization to be able to tell (say, from body language alone) which one is which.

You're allowed to have two characters that look alike, and you're allowed to have some kind of "they're the same except this one's an asshole" symbolism, but for the love of whatever you deem worthy, you are not allowed to confuse your audience so broadly and immediately that they literally cannot tell two of the main characters apart.

Glad to hear you liked it :D

My only quiff was that Mako hardly spoke in the Jaeger. I wanted to hear her make some badass calls. Besides that, YAY GIANT ROBOTS, SASSY SCIENTISTS, SEXY AUSTRALIANS, AND MAKO'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH RAELEIGH AND PAPA STACKER.

I didn't pay much attention to words spoken once people were inside those skulls XD such a cool set up with that design and how they'd make them walk and move

Her ... Was it kendo? Fencing with the sticks was awesome :D and I think they balanced her cultural respect for the commander with her obvious desire to fight very well

Yay! I am happy you enjoyed yourself anon it's such a fun movie.

I agree that it was kind of annoying that we didn't get a very large spread of ladies but I certainly liked that they were treated with the same respect that all the men had.

ZOMG IT HAS AN ARTBOOK? OH JEEZE. :o

Re: Pacific rim anon one last time

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
YEAH

I only know cause I follow a bunch of artists and one of them had it arrive a couple of days ago XD and when I REALLY LIKE something the FIRST THING I do is see if it has an art book, because I LOVE concept art and worldbuilding and explanations on creation.

It looks like it comes with a bunch of posters and badges and stuff too, but I'm not sure that may have been that one collectors version on ebay...

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I saw it for the second time today.

If it makes you feel any better about the small number of women, there's a few more mentioned in the graphic novel, Tales from Year Zero? Particularly Dr Caitlin Lightcap, who invented the two-pilot system that made jaegers usable, and was half of the first team to ever take down a kaiju. Stacks' old co-pilot was also a woman, and the only reason she fell unconscious during the Mako-saving fight in Tokyo was because of cancer she'd gotten from their jaeger's reactor.

Oooh maybe I can find this. Not normally a comic fan, but hey if I'm going to blindly dive into absorbing all it's media!
