I saw an interview with Abrams once where he said he never was a fan of Star Trek because he didn't "get it". This is who they put in charge of rebooting the franchise? Ooookay.

(To be honest, I enjoyed the first*, but from everything I've read/heard about the new one makes me want to stay far away from now on.)

*I pretended it was AU fanfic. Really expensively produced AU fanfic

DA. I think they're decent action flicks, but they're decidedly not Star Trek.

I'm not an TOS nut so it doesn't bother me as much as your average fan, but I'm hoping once the movies die out they start doing television shows again. I miss Trek on tv.

I'd love some Trek on my TV again. Especially if they moved it to the TNG/DS9/VOY era. I always liked that time period better than TOS, honestly.

Same, TNG, DS9 and Voyager were the Treks I grew up with and watched from beginning to end and I want that on my tv again. I don't mind if they build on TOS, but they need to build off of the right things, mainly the idealism and the philosophy that comes from Trek. The new movies are fun but they're very shallow.

Yes, this. TNG/DS9/VOY is when they really started world-building sensibly and developing characters and story arcs. I miss them.

Yup, it was on the Daily Show. Though apparently it's out of context and he also said he really respects it and he grew to appreciate it or something? I don't know. It was so long ago when I heard this.

Actually, iirc, it wasn't until he started doing the movie and rewatched them he got some appreciation for them...but also that he was making the movies for people "like him" which...really does not bode well for any of the future movies.

I never said it was before he got the job to do the movies? Just that he grew to appreciate it later.

I wasn't saying you were? Just clarifying what he'd said since he'd already started working on the movie before he come to appreciate the series which still leaves it in '...And you guys wanted him/he agreed to this because...?'

Oooooohh. Okay. I'm having issues with communication recently. Ignore me.

Yeah. The worst part really is him saying that he's not making it for the fans, which is not only an outright lie when the last movie was half shout-out material to another movie but also misses one of the best parts, in my opinion, of Star Trek. Yes, by all means broaden the appeal to more people because that's a good thing, but don't do that at the expense of the material itself, you know?

He goes on to say he didn't appreciate it as a kid and it wasn't until he was older that he understood the appeal. Now it's his favorite show. (Or one of them, can't remember the exact phrasing.)
