[Picture is God from the manhwa "About Death". He is depicted as a man with voluminous dark hair and a short beard and mustache wearing sunglasses and a hoodie with a camera strapped to his neck. He seems friendly.]

This man and manga are responsible for reducing me to gasping sobs of sorrow, pain and release. I have struggled with the idea of faith and God for years and losing one of the most loved people last year furthered my doubt and hatred. The idea that the person I love was met by this wonderful and fair man brings me more closure and comfort than anything in the world. To me, this is truly what God looks like now.

Secret because: Finding God from a Korean manga sounds incredibly ridiculous and a bit blasphemous.

Doesn't God work in mysterious ways and all that? I'm thinking a decent deity would have their influence everywhere in subtle and unusual ways. Seems okay to me. But what do I know, me atheist.

I'm glad it made you so happy, OP! And it's not ridiculous or blasphemous -- how can something that had such a positive effect on you be inappropriate?

I've always liked the movie versions of God that depict a chill, quirky, nurturing being, like Morgan Freeman in Bruce Almighty or Alanis Morissette in Dogma. A personality you could believe would've be both temperamental and loving, someone weird enough to make all the awesome things in this world and be forever amused by the antics of humans.

Like the Dude. But really big... with less bong residue in his clothes. XD

Have you seen the version of God in Mind Game? (No English subtitles, but the description is good and the animation entertaining imo)

I don't know anything about the series so I can't comment too much, but I definitely don't think that feeling closer to God via a manga is "blasphemous" in the slightest. God can communicate with us in a variety of ways, and what makes manga/comics more or less respectable than movies, "real" books, music, etc? It's still a medium that reflects and conveys certain ideas and emotions. And I also agree that God(dess? I don't think God has a definite gender, personally) is a lot more loving and compassionate than we imagine him/her/it/they to be, especially given humanity's many, many fuckups.

-shrugs- Not really? It could just be me but, where faith/religion/god/whatever is concerned...I think people find God [or not] in the way that works best for *them* - and that God understands and is totally cool with that.

So...No. I don't think it's ridiculous or anywhere near blasphemy. [Then again, all things considered, what I think is blasphemy tends be closer to "Making fun of other people's religions [or lack there of]/not being accepting" so...^^;; Grain of salt and all that.]

Finding God in the little, seemingly silly and insignificant, things makes perfect sense to me. That's always where the most important things are.

God can be anything you want them to be OP, and as long as the way you see God makes you feel better about your life nobody should make you feel bad about it. I once read that smaller children start with believing that God is an old man aka. a tangible person before moving to more abstract version of this which I guess is what you did since you mentioning liking the fairness of the character. (I got stuck in the "God = man with white beard" phase which I partly blame the Simpsons for before I became an atheist. I wonder if I would have envolved on this perception later on)

"Blasphemous" lol
Pretty sure if there is a god they don't care about your ways to faith because they have too many universes to manage.

I am the OP of this secret. Seeing it both first and seeing that it's not really so ridiculous to find God in something like a manhwa is something really amazing.

Thanks, guys. Keep on rockin'.

God will use anything to connect to people. :)

Oh, I'm the same - I'm an atheist, but I love fair, funny portrayals of Death in any medium (this is the main reason Death is my favourite Discworld character). It makes me feel better about my own mortality when I'm thinking about it too much and it's frightening me.

I don't think it's blasphemous or stupid that reading something like this brought you closer to your faith - the best fiction tells us something about ourselves, inspires us and affects our lives. (I say this as someone who was eventually brought out of three years of clinical depression by a video game, so massive changes of mindset due to a story you love? Yeah, I can understand that.)

I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you're feeling better.

I will start off by saying I am a Christian, then follow by saying that I do not think this is blasphemy, add in a reference to the saying "God works in mysterious ways" and conclude that anyone who does think it's blasphemy is being a ridiculous religious snob.

And I mean all that quite seriously. Especially the bit about anyone who says finding God through a comic is blasphemy is a religious snob. Anything that brings people closer to God is good. No matter how odd it seems.
