I track the tag and I'm wincing.

I think I'm more annoyed by the fact JKR basically made Tonks Remus's Manic Pixie Dream Girl and stuck to her usual 'everyone has only ONE TRUE LOVE' bullshit than anything else. Not really surprised, though. Just annoyed.

And so what if it's not canon. I must have missed the letter that ships that weren't canon were Not Allowed In Fandom or something.

I'm willing to take "THE POWER OF LOVE" Tonks with a grain of salt, because... well, it didn't work out that way exactly. It still vividly sticks in my mind that Lupin was willing to abandon her through pregnancy on the off-chance that she carried a werewolfspawn.

I also think there's a validation and smugness factor that comes with "being right" as far as shipping goes. I never really took to that mentality myself, but you can't deny that in big fandoms like Harry Potter, it's very much there.

How is she his Manic Pixie Dream Girl? The definition is basically: "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."

Remus was already "taught" to embrace life by his friends at school. He had his fun and his adventure and lived life to the fullest with them. When he met Tonks he was depressed about: deaths of the people he loved, being seen as second class citizen and diseased and monstrous, being poor and jobless, and the whole war in general. Tonk made him happy, but it wasn't nearly the MPDG kind of bullshit. In fact he kept running away from it because he was loaded with guilt.

Remus only fell in love once precisely because he never let himself get close to women because he was afraid that his lycanthropy would endanger her or any child they'd ever have. He probably had loads of crushes (and Jo implied he had a crush on Lily) but that's not really a One True Love situation.

This.

Also: Tonks was badass as fuck in her own right. Which is an important thing to remember.

This! And she was badass in a girly and lighthearted kind of way, too. She wasn't a stereotypical hardass, masculine type of female badass. She was the number one auror's protégé but still had fun joking around with the younger girls. And she was in Hulfflepuff.

I just... whatever'd at that one. It made me think of Twilight, and as someone who loved Remus/Tonks and hates Twilight...

It's not "one true love", it's very specifically something that was the consequence of Remus' choices and actions. And then circumstances changed. It's not like Tonks was his soulmate or anything; he changed and the world changed around him and something that hadn't happened before happened. But the fact that it happened when it hadn't before doesn't mean it was magical. It could have happened otherwise.

Er, to be clear, the fact that Remus never fell in love was the result of his own choices and actions - Remus and Tonks getting together was not solely the result of his own choices and actions, being that Tonks played a role in it.

Ya. I have no investment in R/S, but man Pottermore is an endless source of 'Really, Joanne Murray?' for me.
