Every fandom has got it's loud and kind of scary fans, and tbh the spn fandom has several sets of those just to make things... fun.

And it's not just the D/C'ers that shit on the ladies, it's been happening since day one and doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon(there are just even more shippers to add to it now).

''It's been happening since day one.''

Oh my gosh, this. One of the most infuriating stories I ever heard was that the reason Bela's storyline was handled so badly was because the fans hated her, so Eric Kripke caved and killed her off. As a big fan of Bela's character, that pissed me off. I also believe Ruby's storyline was supposed to be different? Or maybe that was someone else.

I read somewhere that Jo was going to be Dean's romantic interest and that the would've ended up together in season 5 except that the fans hated her, so Kripke killed her and Ellen too.

and having read some fan comments regarding female characters in Spn... I'm starting to believe it, and it is pissing me off.

Really? I've never heard that one. I always heard that she was supposed to be a love interest in season two, but that they came off as more brother/sister on screen.

Anna was also supposed to be his love interest, but she got the boot because the fans unexpectedly took such a liking to Cas and the boys only needed one angelic guardian. (Some claim Cas also replaced Anna as the love interest. I'm not among them.)

So, basically, every single female that was killed/dissapeared between seasons 2 and 5 were probably going to be Dean's romantic interest? Sigh, now I'm going to find myself wondering when Lisa is going to bite the dust... (still on season 6, please don't spoil me if she does bite the dust)

Sigh, and now I'm feeling a bit guilty for shipping Dean and Cas :(

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel guilty! It's not your fault (or Cas's!) <3

Also, my understanding is that Bela was never meant to be a love interest and was killed because the writers just did too good a job of making her unsympathetic (the season getting cut short by the writer's strike probably didn't help; they didn't have time to add much depth to her character.) Ellen and Jo, along with Ash, were partly victims of Kripke's own dislike of them--he got pressured into putting the Roadhouse into the story by the network, and got rid of everything connected with it as soon as he could. The rat. -_-

It's hard to say whether Anna got the axe more due to fan dislike or because she really was just a third wheel once they decided to keep Cas. Possibly both, though I think they could've found a place for her in the story if they'd really tried. I'd be less ticked off if they'd just left her in limbo after Cas turned her in rather than bringing her back just to kill her.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with shipping Dean and Cas. Just remember that not everyone does and that there's a lot more to both of their characters than just the ship, and you're fine. :)

It's probably because I got in the fandom so late, that I find so many different and conflicting sources about what was going on in those seasons (Personally, I did hate Bela, so I can't say I was sad to see her go. I just hated HOW she went). I had no idea that Kripke disliked the Roadhouse characters, since I thought Ellen and Jo, up until their useless deaths, had wonderful episodes written for them. Interesting. And sad at the same time.
I'd have liked for Anna to stay in limbo too. At this point I'm in (s6, ep 9), I'm starting to cringe every time a female character returns for a second episode because I fear for them.
Aww... thanks :) I love both characters on their own (Dean more than Cas, to be honest. Right now, I get the feeling that the writers have no idea what to do with Cas and it's sad), but I also love their relationship and it's sad that in all the places I've seen that are for general fandom (because I also love the rest of the series, even if I'm really unhappy with Sam at the moment), I have seen a lot of hostility against the Dean and Cas ship. Even in places like this, I end up seeing how the shippers are the worst crazies ever, and I have to be honest, it's the weirdest sensation ever to actually ship a ship that is very popular in the fandom... and at the same time is so hated (I used to only ship rare pairs, so yeah, new experience)

(Bela was an effective villain. She was a complete and total failure as a human being. She'd make a passable crossroads demon, though.)

Hyperbole and generalizations are rampant in fandom. Most Destiel shippers aren't crazy people who hate Sam/Jared, most Wincest shippers aren't tinhatters who hate Cas/Misha, and most fans of any camp don't hate or wish harm on any of the actors' families. But the ones who do tend to be extremely vocal and persistent, and there's just enough of them to give their more reasonable fellows a bad name and trigger negative reactions even when a sane shipper just gets a little bit overenthused.

Myself, I'm a Cas!girl all the way and I don't ship him with Dean, though I like Dean fine and I love their friendship. I sail the tiny, feeble little ghost ship of Cas and Anna. *Waves little rarepair flag* XD But I follow a number of Destiel shippers and they're quite nice people. I do wish it was easier to find Cas fans who don't ship it, but, them's the breaks, and I can always blacklist Destiel if I really need to.

I read somewhere that Jo was going to be Dean's romantic interest and that the would've ended up together in season 5 except that the fans hated her, so Kripke killed her and Ellen too. There is so much misogyny in the SPN fandom that I don't understand why you have to make up misogynistic shit. The above is def not true.

"I read somewhere" <-- doesn't mean the source is correct, just that it exists. My bff and I have just started to watch the show, and when we hit season 5, we both started looking for answers about why the hell Jo and Ellen died. I believe the conversation in question was in Fandom Wank, although I can't find the link right now.

In any case, I have been looking for a source to deny that because yes, there's a lot of misogynistic shit in the fandom, so it's plausible to believe things like the one I read. Luckyly "random anon on Fandom!Secrets" has exactly the same authority as "random user on Fandom!Wank (Or maybe ONTD)" so now I can say to my BFF 'oh, no. I read somewhere that the writers killed Jo just because they wanted to kill a character that week'
