You...should probably be made to go fetch your own switch.

As someone who DID have to fetch their own switch, I'm so pissed off right now that your entire point was lost.

Surely you could have chosen a better way of phrasing your dislike for whatever-the-hell-it-is.

*sad high five of solidarity anon* I used to have to go get my own switch from the peach tree in the front yard. :C

what does "fetching a stick" mean?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
To be beaten with, I assume.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

The usage of "fetch your own switch" makes me suspect OP is trolling. (Since John strikes me as exactly the sort of parent who would go for "fetch your won switch".)

I used to fetch my own switch from the apple tree in the back. It didn't scar me for life or whatever.

DA

I never had to fetch a switch, but I did have to provide the belt sometimes. I wasn't especially scarred by it and it was considered pretty standard when/where I was growing up, but, whatever your thoughts on physical discipline, some parents/guardians take it way, way too far.

My grandparents used this method of punishment when my father and his siblings were growing up - they would try and go for skinnier sticks, but this usually backfired, as the slimmer switches swung faster and thus stung more. One day my uncle wised up to this, and when his mother sent him out to bring back a switch, and he came back dragging a log that was so heavy he could barely lift it.

And on that day, he got out of receiving any punishment whatsoever, as grandma was laughing too hard go through with his switching.

That's the most awesome "fetching a switch" story I've ever heard.

I had to fetch my own switch too. I'm not having PTSD flashbacks.

Why are you having such a visceral reaction to it. I'm curious.

nayrt, but

You really can't imagine that other peoples experiences of parental punishment might have been worse than yours? Like, more violent, more frightening, more unjustified, more frequent, accompanied by other forms of punishment (strong verbal reprimands, isolation, deprivation) and perhaps leaning closer to abuse than discipline?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
This.

What the fuck was that comment?
