Supernatural, seasons 1 - 2. He's not that much on the series, thought, but I agree with the sentiment. I love JDM, even if my feelings towards John are a bit... mixed.

I kinda thought he was a dick father. Wouldn't say I hate him, it's impossible to hate Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but if I'd ever been in the fandom, I might have had an argument or two with anyone making excuses for how he prioritized hunting over raising his damn kids.

I don't HATE him, and I do think he THOUGHT he was doing the right thing ... but IMHO he was a terrible father, who damaged his boys beyond belief by neglecting them physically and emotionally... actual emotional abuse is arguable, too, I think...

Still, he's a very interesting character that I can't help feeling compassionate toward despite his failings as a parent :/

It's pretty huge among the Dean!girl faction on Tumblr which makes me quite a sad Dean!girl. Dean's relationship with John was always the most fascinating one for me to explore and yet none of these fans seem to give John the slightest bit of slack at all. At best, it's "he did the best he could and his best FUCKING SUCKED" and at worst - damn. It's pretty serious character bashing, that's for sure. Plus they put anything they don't like about Dean's insecurities entirely on John's shoulders and, yeah, John fucked Dean up but good but not all of Dean's issues directed entirely from John.

Unfortunately, the Tumblr faction of Dean!girls are also the only faction of Dean!girls I know of who are still active. My desperate need for fresh Dean content keeps me tuned in, despite how sad the John bashing makes me.

Did you know that people can hate whatever character they want to hate? That's actually a thing that happens in life sometimes. Sometimes, people have different tastes. And that's okay.

Telling people that they suck for not liking a character you like and telling them to ''go fetch their own switch'' is not okay and is, in fact, disgusting. And extremely immature.

I actually legitimately don't understand how people can say that he did his best or that he was a good father. It just boggles my mind that people think what he did can be excused because he was ~hot~ or because ''he had a hard life.''

I think people go to far to either extreme with John, either "No he's really an awesome amazing dude" or "OMG he's a demon from the pits of hell" when, really, he's a shitty neglectful and emotionally abusive father, but a kickass hunter and someone who (in his own emotionally stunted way) loves his kids to death. Doesn't make me like him or want to write/read about him (I dislike shitty fathers in media more than most anything) but it does make him an interesting character.

What I don't get is how it's "hypocritical" to hate John for being a shitty father. No one is obligated to be equally upset about every characters flaws...

Oh heeeyyyyy there dodger_winslow, long time no crazy rant about what a magical, perfect father and beacon of light John Winchester was.

But seriously, John may have not been the worst dad to ever fuck up a couple of kids, but he wasn't awesome by any means, even being played by sex on a stick JDM doesn't erase some of the shitty things he did. He was pretty emotionally abusive to his children, and there's evidence he was physically abusive as well, at least towards Dean.

Besides, his character is a a buttload more interesting this way, considering what a doofy, naive guy he was before the angels and demons started actively fucking with his destiny. (I read a theory somewhere that I really liked, it talked about how John's obsessive personality stemmed from the cupid zapping him and Mary. Like, after she died, he was unable to move on because of the cupid love connection, and that's part of the reason he went so insane.)

Oh, and so nice of you to wish physical abuse on people you disagree with. You are clearly the level-headed, right-thinking party in this argument.
