I can't figure out the making friends part either. I mostly reblog things and sometimes I message people if they post something that indicates they'd like a personal message. I don't get messages back, however, so I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or that's just how it is.

Most people on Tumblr aren't good at social interaction. Because they don't know you, they aren't sure how to respond and therefore never do. (And then they never know you because they never respond. It's a vicious cycle). Your best bet is to follow people you've met in real life. For example, nearly everyone on my followers list is somebody I met at Comic-Con last year, or at college. (And then there's Wil Wheaton's blog, but I digress.)

Follow people I've met IRL? Oh dear I don't know any other nerds...

My problem too!

I don't know whether this is what has happened to you or not, but recently, I messaged someone on tumblr complimenting their blog, and didn't seem to get any message back. When I checked their page later on, though, I saw they'd replied a few days before.

There's also been times when I've received messages not in reply to anything, and I didn't get any alerts about this of any kind. Not every time I've had a message, just sometimes.

So yeah, the alerts system is not the best (or maybe I don't have the right things turned on???) and maybe you've had some replies but just not noticed?

In regards to replies: If your username doesn't have dashes, I would try searching the universal tag for it. Most users reply directly on their blog which can get lost, so they tag the post with the username of the person they are talking to. If they did this, all the messages from all blogs who messaged you back would be in your tumblr tag (not a specific blog tag, the one that is searchable through tumblr).
