I think that's why a bunch of them rebooted recently. Marvel had a bunch start over, I just jumped in with Avengers vs X-men, my movie knowledge, and the almighty google. It hasn't been that difficult. Now I've got a 20 dollar a week habit. (and Hawkeye and Gambit are my 2 faves right now).

I think DC also just rebooted with the new 52. Or there are plenty that are not the big ones, I got a neat indie Mermaids one at Free Comic Book day this year.

Yeah, this very much. I finally started reading the superhero books when the New 52 came out ... and I promptly started buying a bunch of the may no longer be in continuity books as well.

It's really not that hard. And yeah, as someone below said, Google is your friend.

I think you did it right. That's what I did too when I started reading comics. Just find something you like (again, google the characters from the movies/cartoons/whathaveyou that you like) and go for it. (Also, Hawkeye and Gambit are both awesome. ;) )

Once you get in, honestly the majority of the comics fandom community will open it's arms and help if you want to find other fun stuff to read. Finding a place to start (Hawkeye is a GREAT idea) is the hard part and it's really not that hard at all.

Which ones are the reboots? /an utterly lost person

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
They're technically not reboots but late last year Marvel started their current Marvel Now line which require little to no knowledge of past events. Some of the titles that come to mind are:

Guardians of the Galaxy
Thor: God of Thunder
Hawkeye
Secret Avengers
Deadpool
X-Men

All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men are also pretty easy to get into but they require knowing the Avengers vs X-Men event. Reading a summary of the event should be fine. Knowing decades of X-Men comics is not a requirement.

This is why I got so into Ultimate X-Men when it was first out before that whole universe went down the drain.

It was new, I liked it, awesome. But, in true Marvel fashion, there were a shit ton of crossovers that happened and I just stuck with Ultimate X-Men and wiki'd what I didn't know or was too lazy to go download.

Ugh.
