AYRT

I don't see how you can say this and also say the movie is bad.

The story was bad. The dialogue was bad. The characters weren't exactly shining paragons of originality or, with few exceptions, well rounded. Objectively I'd say the movie is bad because of all these things and not at all deserving of all the hype.

But just because something is bad doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. It's why some people enjoy reading bad fic, or why I love Stonehenge Apocalypse (have you seen that movie? Now, that's a movie that's really really bad, but awesome because it's so bad).

(It's funny you should mention the sword though; it's one of our favorite parts to mock.)

Yes, this is precisely what I disagree with.

Using the sword as an example: from any logical perspective it doesn't make sense that they use it the way they do. But it's so cool, and the moment when it's first used is such an awesome, visceral kick, that I don't understand how you can use that as a serious objection. And it would not have been so awesome if they had set it up more. It is far less logical, but it is far more effective, and that is much more important.

And the rest of it, yes, the story was simplistic, the characters were deeply and profoundly unoriginal, but again, it was all incredibly effective, so I don't see how its bad. Those characteristics are usually the characteristics of bad movies, but they're not actually identical with being a bad movie. And in this case, they're not, because it is working on a different level. And because it is all done with so much joy and energy. And that's why it is deserving of the hype.

you sound pretty butthurt to refuse to accept someone can think a movie sucks but enjoy its suckiness

i'm glad you were able to pick up on the furious anger that was radiating out of every pore of my body when i was writing that post

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
you don't need to be capslocking and arguing in circles to make your annoyance obvious

trying to argue the subject in general is pointless because everyone has different tastes in what they enjoy

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
oh, okay, you're actually serious

i'm really, really not annoyed. i really liked pacific rim and i really enjoy talking about it and trying to get at what i liked about it, and that's what's going on here. sorry if i came across like i was annoyed.

i agree that everyone has different tastes than what they enjoy, the thing that i was responding to was that the OP of this thread seemed like the enjoyed the movie but didn't think it was good, which is an interesting position and one that i wanted to talk about in relation to the movie and the reasons i liked it, because, again, i liked the movie

i have no beef with people not liking it, which is why i didn't say anything to the original secret poster

i hope you enjoyed this apologia for my posts. in conclusion, i would like to say that pacific rim was rad, and giant monsters must be destroyed. thank you, and good night

I still hold that there's something original in Newt Geiszler being a nerd who actually speaks and acts like a nerd, instead of just Cardboard Hollywood Nerd Cutout.

Stonehenge Apocalypse isn't even that good of a good bad movie.

Man, people need to get better "good bad" movies on their lists.

Personally, if we are talking killer animal movies, I prefer 'Blood Monkeys' for that F. Murray Abraham realness. (The Man-Eater series in general is pretty good for the most part.) Or, Sharktopus (fuck, Sharknado, that shit was bad bad bad).

Now, if we are talking other kinds of good bad movies, how about Miami Connection? How about R.O.T.O.R? Or, my favorite good bad movie, A Talking Cat!?! I could go on all day, I swear.

I've only just been introduced to the joy of bad movies in the last couple years so I'm still catching up, and most of the ones I've seen have been SyFy Channel movies. But thanks for the recs! :D

Sharks in Venice.

No, seriously, Sharks in Venice. You want a hilariously awesome horrible shark movie? That's my pick. Bad CGI water, a boat that's clearly being rolled by a window, stock footage. SHARKS IN VENICE.

Omg thank you. That's sounds amazing.

You're welcome! I've got three top Bad Shark Movies:

Sharks In Venice - Just horribly cheesy and bad and fantastic
Sharktopus - Knows exactly what it is and did it perfectly
Spring Break Shark Attack - You think it's just gonna be tits and blood but then it's got Real Science (TM) and a likeable female protagonist and condemns attempted rape because that's a metaphor in the whole movie and who knew? I think it actually might pass the Bechdel test, though I'd have to rewatch to check.

AYRT (I think... I had to go to sleep and now I've lost track of the thread)

Have you played the drinking game while watching the movie? Trust me, it instantly elevates SA from not-so-good bad movie to awesome bad movie.
