Then don't use tumblr for that, there are often plenty of alternative ways to build a discussion.

Like what? As far as I've seen, tumblr users don't move to other platforms when they try to tell each other something, and following conversations on tumblr is a fucking nightmare.

I don't have a problem opening the notes for a post. But if I want to discuss books, I'll go to goodreads. If I want to discuss games, I'll go to mefightclub. Tumblr does exactly what I need for it to do which is follow brilliant people who post links to whatever interesting stuff is current for them today.

Or just use LJ or DW and try to recruit quality over quantity.

When I open notes on a post, I may have to scroll back through five pages of reblogs-without-comment to find one or two lines of actual response. And then, once I've seen those, if I want to go back through the next five pages of notes, there's no way to do it without having to start all over again, and no way to know if I'll even find any more responses, because Tumblr notes can't sort simple reblogs from reblogs with additions.

I'm sometimes willing to try it, but it's a hell of a lot of work.
