Except that it did happen all the time on LJ with people taking their disagreements to their own followers or snark communities. There are entire communities on LJ devoted to nastiness, and fan communities that routinely got nasty over differences of interpretation.
I've seen pissing matches jump platforms and domain names. Just today, I skimmed one that's spread across two different blogs. I think it's a problem that goes all the way back to listserv and usenet. That's not going to stop unless you break the internet by blocking copy and paste. That's not a limitation of the social media platform, it's an asshole problem.
Indeed, there's no sane way to conduct any discussion of any length at all.
Then don't use tumblr for that, there are often plenty of alternative ways to build a discussion.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 01:56 am (UTC)(link)Like what? As far as I've seen, tumblr users don't move to other platforms when they try to tell each other something, and following conversations on tumblr is a fucking nightmare.

Or just use LJ or DW and try to recruit quality over quantity.

I'm sometimes willing to try it, but it's a hell of a lot of work.

It's not that nothing nasty ever happened on LJ; it's just that tumblr is not and was never meant to be a discussion platform. It's a sharing platform, which is great and useful, but not the same thing.
And as far as your suggestion that I or anybody else simply seeking a discussion just use another platform, well, yes—except tumblr is Where Fandom Is now, and I'm not the kind of tectonic-plate-level BNF that can simply decide to have my fandom conversations somewhere else. I have to go where the conversation already is. And right now, whether I like it or not, that's tumblr.
