Welcome to Nightvale listerners, a question...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I will be driving about 4-5+ hours over the weekend, and I plan on listening to Welcome to Nightvale along the way. I've never tried it before, but all of my friends are into it and it seems really interesting.

I've been told that the announcer is NPR-esque, so I worry about being lulled to sleep by his voice as I am driving.

So, will the podcast put me to sleep (thereby putting my life and other motorists' in jeopardy) or what?

towards the end of some of the episodes he will definitely start lulling me to sleep, I can't lie, but most of the time that's not possible because the story will be making you laugh nonstop.

I haven't listened to it, but I heard you have to really pay attention. I don't know if this is true, but if it is I don't know how much attention you can pay to it while you are driving.

A bit, yes, because it's a story in news bulletin form.

I can't carry on a conversation or read threads on f!s or pay attention to tumblr while I'm listening to it but I can most certainly drive. It's like listening to an audiobook or a talk radio show.

I'd say yes it might. I love WTNV, but I can't listen to it when I am sleepy OR doing something that I have to think about (I listen to it primarily while making GIFs).

Re: Welcome to Nightvale listerners, a question...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he doesn't have that sort of lulling voice. He has just a regular voice. Not much to write home to. It's more of what he's saying that has everyone in love with the show.

So don't expect a Tom Hiddleston, Alan Rickman or even a James Earl Jones type voice. You are not going to get it.

I you're doing nothing, then YES. I've once slept through an entire episode because I was lying on the bed when I listened to it.

I usually listen to it when I'm driving. It keeps me entertained when I duck and weave through my country's notorious traffic.

I had to listen to the most recent episode 4 times because I was exhausted (from my trip) and kept falling asleep.

I had to listen to it twice because I was super tired from all the fasting and lack of sleep I've had over the month!

Also, happy Eid. :)

I am not Muslim (not do I celebrate Ramadan) but happy Eid to you as well. I think I remember you saying you were Muslim (or at least you celebrate Ramadan).

I am embarrassed to say my knowledge is poor, in addition to fasting for meals, do you also abstain from favorite things (like chocolate or video games)?

Are you me, because I'm also going on a long drive and I'm downloading Nightvale right now to listen to on the trip.

Fortunately I'm not driving, though, so good luck on staying awake!

No, he does different voices for different characters and sometimes he's really dark and spooky but other times he sounds like an excited tumblr user plus there's background music, and a music segment in the middle-ish (closer to the end; I personally don't like the music too much but you might). Actually one of my friends said she didn't like all the ~spooky~ effects he does and would be into it if he sounded more like NPR so...different strokes I guess?

Doctor Who audiobooks rec

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For anyone who is into Doctor Who, Big Finish has some really good audiobooks out (most of which can be found at the bay of piratical persons, last I checked) none of which lulled me to sleep~

Here is a good rec list for the DW audios:

Think you might have misfired there.

Honestly, I'd recommend listening to an episode before you go and seeing if it starts putting you to sleep, since that's something that can vary wildly between people.

It will not put you to sleep but it will distract you. I can't do other things but basic tasks like cleaning but I wouldn't be able to drive. I love Welcome to Night ale but I honestly wouldn't advise it while driving.

I think it depends more on the driver. For example, I don't think i'd have a problem driving and listening to new segments.

Seriously? Snap girl, you're good. Then I take back what I said and will say this instead: Figure out what kind of driver you are and if you can do it safely. Maybe do a short drive around the neighborhood and see if you can do both at the same time.

I blame LA.

The short drive is a great idea! I wouldn't've thought of that. You should totally do that, OP.

Eh, I'm the girl who can't listen to the radio while driving because I get too into songs so maybe I'm a weirdo. (Then again, I also haven't driven in forever.)

But other people were saying they had trouble listening to it while trying to do other things. (Like Fonona, she can't listen to it and play WoW at the same time, nor can she talk to me on skype when listening.)

So yes, everyone is different. The test drive seems like your best bet OP.

I definitely wouldn't be able to do those things, either. I can't even listen to the radio while talking to someone on the phone. In both cases, you're trying to follow -- and create -- two different stories, and dealing with two sets of language inputs/outputs. But driving is a different function for me, so it doesn't cause the same problem.

I don't get lulled to sleep by NPR, but if you do it might be best not to.

Forgottenjester turned me onto Night Vale, since I've been getting more interested in the horror genre, and I think it's a lot of fun.

Have a safe and fun drive!
