[Pride and Prejudice (2005)]

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Never see either of them, but Colin Firth is pretty plain-looking. I don't know why people go on about him.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
He's a classic example of how a person's attractiveness has many, many dimensions beyond physical appearance. If you've never been attracted to someone who's "pretty plain-looking" but had so many other things going for them that they were beautiful in your eyes, then that kind of makes me sad.

I still haven't found my perfect Darcy *with U2 music*

[Picture is the actor Matthew Macfadyen playing Mr. Darcy from the 2005 film "Pride & Prejudice". He is a man with either short dark hair or long dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. He has light skin, is wearing a white shirt, brown pants or trousers and a dark gray coat. He is standing on a field, looking forlorn.]

I feel like a traitor for preferring this Darcy over Colin Firth.

Secret Because: I more or less grew up on the nineties BBC version.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer him too. I like his interpretation of Darcy as a simply very shy man more than Colin's approach (though I do love Colin in the miniseries).

Plus he is so so so pretty. I didn't even have plans to see the movie version (having adored the miniseries and seeing no need to) until a friend of mine linked me a clip of him proposing in the rain. *cue actual screaming fangirl*

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the McFayden version, but if he's playing Darcy as simply a very shy man, then that's badly off target for the character.

Nobody will ever put a twelve foot Matthew Mcfadyen in a lake.

That thing was TWELVE FEET? Oh man that makes it even better. I wonder how big the nipples were.

Ugh. You're not the only one, OP. I love this version of Pride and Prejudice and this Darcy.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The good thing is that a preference for the one dies not result in the removal of the other \o/ So I personally might find your opinion to be wrong, but hey, more for meeeee

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. His Darcy felt much closer to how I saw book!Darcy than Colin Firth's did.

I couldn't get through the BBC version. The performances seemed average at best, even from Firth. I acknowledge the Joe Wright version does some things that aren't in the spirit of the novel, but I still love it.

Me too. I don't dislike Colin Firth in the role, but I never thought he was so super amazingly amazing as so many other people did. Matthew Macfadyen worked much better for me, although I don't think I would say he was the perfect Darcy. But I really liked his shyness.

I don't really get all the fuss about Darcy as a character though. If we're talking Austen men, I'm going with Mr Tilney.

I like him better, because he was much closer to the book for me. There was a lot more social misunderstanding and awkwardness rather than intentionally rude behavior, whereas Colin Firth kind of just seemed like a jerk.

I love Colin Firth, but there's no shame in preferring one portrayal over another, OP. :) Just because you didn't happen to grow up with it doesn't mean it shouldn't appeal to you more.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-09 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I liked both Darcys, but from a shallow point of view, P&P is about the only movie where McFayden looked hot.

I prefer him too, don't wrory. There are some Austen fans like us out there!

This man makes me all quivery.

I had this great dream where I was the filling in the middle of a Matthew McFadyen and Richard Armitage sandwich. Why do you hate me, morning sunlight

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't feel he got Darcy at all, and I love Matthew McFadyen, adored him in Spooks. He was just all wrong in P and P though. I really disliked that film. Donald Sutherland has always been great, but he was totally off base and his uber white fake teeth really took me out of the film.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I like bits and pieces of both but I was never really attached to either as Darcy. I don't mind, though, because that always leaves me excited for the next version and the next Darcy. ;)
