I dunno...to be honest, I think I don't like the "Superpowered people/ those with great abilities team up and work together" idea, because for whatever reason, it annoyed me so deeply in The Avengers last summer.

But people praised it for that. "Working together is more important than being the best" is a great moral, but you can be damn sure that one person tried to go it alone when the Kaiju first attacked and got their ass handed to them, even looking past the problems with the first jaegers so why not team up. It had a kind of 'necessity' feeling instead of 'for the good of the people'.

How are they super powered? A couple of characters are very smart (they ought to be since they are scientists) and a couple of people are very to somewhat athletic.

There was a necessity, of course (saving the world) but, the people that were there wanted to be there -even Raliegh- for the good of the world.

I count them under 'those with great abilities'.

So, under your definition, pretty much every protagonist or movie character is someone with great abilities since movie characters are typically put in a extraordinary circumstance that require them to be strong or smart or whatever.

No?

The main characters in PR had great abilities (staring down monsters, working together, fighting skills)

...The entire decision for each one being chosen was a) can fight and b) work in a team. Hardly great abilities, unless you're counting the fact that each pilot is the top of the crop - which is kind of what you want.

I don't think "teamwork" is really the moral of Pacific Rim?

I mean, it's a thing that happens in Pacific Rim, but it's not like it's the main theme of the movie, or an obstacle that has to be overcome, or anything. It's more about determination, and getting back on the horse when difficult things happen, and all that kind of thing.
