So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
2013 has been extremely disappointing in film, but this was the second best movie i've seen.

I do need that theme that played every twenty minutes downloaded.

But people praised it for that. "Working together is more important than being the best" is a great moral, but you can be damn sure that one person tried to go it alone when the Kaiju first attacked and got their ass handed to them, even looking past the problems with the first jaegers so why not team up. It had a kind of 'necessity' feeling instead of 'for the good of the people'.

Re: So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)but at the end of the day, I liked it because I like robot movies, and it was a viscerally effective robot movie that was mostly about the things that made me like robot movies in the first place. It was made with a real sense of joy. It didn't do any of the tiring bullshit that I am so bored with and try to focus on how angsty the main characters were, or anything. It was about people in a tough spot, doing things they felt were important bravely and well, in ways that looked fucking awesome and were thrilling.

But I think it's blown up over tumblr because it was such an outline of a movie. Like they gave you all of these interesting looking characters like The Russian Pilots and Choi but with almost no background. Because of this, the fans can take it upon themselves to fill in the blanks. Like coloring book. And they have taken that to heart. Like someone gave them a sandbox and they went to town building castles.

1.) Robots
2.) Punching
3.) Monsters
Seriously, though, I liked that it was unapologetically ridiculous. It was an homage to kaiju, giant robot and big ridiculous action films and tropes without mocking the subject matter. The plot wasn't very complicated. It's earnestness and well-executed simplicity made it fun. Neither was it overly dark or pessimistic, further making it a joy to watch.
Re: So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
Which is probably why fandom is so in love with the movie, tbh; tantalizing hints and unexplored possibilities are fic writers' bread and butter.
Re: So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
1) A male lead with a modest amount of emotional intelligence who can take explicit criticism from a woman.
2) Male and female leads who can disagree with each other without getting into slap-slap-kiss-kiss territory.
3) A character who knows when to disagree with authority and when to be quiet.

Everything else I didn't care for. Also, Charlie Hunnam can't act. I was annoyed I had to put up with him for the entire film.
Re: So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
Plus it had Idris Elba and adorable Kaiju science bros.
Re: So I Finally Saw Pacific Rim...
Maybe 2012 was too amazing in film. There were a shocking number of good films last year.

I LOVED the music, I love the CGI, I loved the artistic layout of the scenes, the colours, the sheer amount of DETAIL that went into the world building. I love how over dramatic the fights were, the sheer scale that was shown through the noise and the movements and the sword that made me laugh and the wall going thorugh half of sydney (haha suck it Opera house). The detail was AMAZING. When the jaeger and kaiju clashed my heart would jump with the music.
I've bought the art book too and holy shit this is a really well designed art book. The detail in the movies is reflected in the book, it's mocked up to be like...like and information port folio with loose info sheets throughout, interactable ID cards with QR, information on the making of.
For me, the movie was pure art. It was all about the visuals and sounds. It was sitting down and just appreciating something for it's detail, the colours and placements of things. Like when gorilla!kaiju clambered all over cars and you could just see it's weight with each shift. The movie was artistic to the extreme, and I really really appreciate all the details and how LARGE everything was. It took an old, silly theme like giant monsters attacking Kaiju and it built it into an amazing, opera..operatic(?) experience for me.
It was gorgeous.
I think it's taken tumblr by storm because it was, well, fun...and pretty. It was a lighthearted seasonal movie and sometimes people really appreciate just watching something to appreciate the visual and aesthetics. Sure it might not be for you, but that doesn't mean countless others cannot enjoy it. It was guilt free, unadulterated fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)People like it. It's okay that you didn't, but you don't need to shit on people for liking it. So what if their reason is Mako, visuals, wacky scientists or because it's robots? Honestly, the amount of people claiming they "don't know why tumblr likes it" so much is stupid. They like it because they liked it, for many reasons or a single reason. Get over it

(Anonymous) 2013-08-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)Other than that it's like... I felt it would've been good if there was more plottage and character development, and less fight scenes. It would've worked well as a TV show IMO; I felt like the plot was kind of crammed into a two-hour time slot and I would've enjoyed it more if things could have taken more time to develop.
