I liked it. I thought it was loads of fun but, yeah, it wasn't the deepest of films. I was expecting character development like something out of District 9 or Moon but I just got an updated version of Godzilla meets Robotech. Still, I am not complaining about those two things because I loved those two things.

But I think it's blown up over tumblr because it was such an outline of a movie. Like they gave you all of these interesting looking characters like The Russian Pilots and Choi but with almost no background. Because of this, the fans can take it upon themselves to fill in the blanks. Like coloring book. And they have taken that to heart. Like someone gave them a sandbox and they went to town building castles.

The lack of character development a la District 9 is precisely what made me enjoy Pacific Rim so much. Because I feel like doing that kind of thing - the hero questions their own cause and their ability to do what they need to do! They go through a Dark Night Of Self Doubt 3/4 of the way through the movie before Regaining Their Faith and overcoming the Important Issues That Are Central To Their Character Arc and Learn A Valuable Lesson! - I mean, I think it's much more common for action movies to do that these days than it is for them to not. Not having that stuff in Pacific Rim was, for me, deeply refreshing.

I'd rather have Stacker Pentecost giving St Crispin's Day speeches and then dying in a noble sacrifice any day, particularly when it is portrayed with as crisp and as light a hand as it is in Pacific Rim.

The lack of character development a la District 9 is precisely what made me enjoy Pacific Rim so much.

Eh, but what character development they did do was entirely too much for the generibland cast they created.

I would have preferred something more like Black Hawk Down with robots and monsters: spend the first fifteen minutes introducing the cast, then let them go to town fightan battols nonstop until the credits roll.
