most teen wolf fic I've seen is OOC. if I ever see "pack mom" stiles again, I'll set myself on fire (jesus, scott is more likely to be "pack mom" than stiles. come on now) v

I've never been able to get into Pack Mom myself, or most of the fic in TW fandom I've read for that matter. I feel like I have to treat all fic as if it's for a completely different show but with similar character names.

I feel like I'm wrong in how I interpret the characters. (Which, I know technically, can't be it because interpretation isn't really about wrong or right but I have the feeling nevertheless.)

Pack Mom Stiles was the worst thing to ever happen to that fandom (along with the "Scott is an incredibly shitty and selfish best friend who can't tie his own shoes even though he is shown numerous times to care an incredible amount about Stiles and has risked his life to do what he believes is right even if he is sometimes misguided" thing)

I'm pretty sure that Pack Mom!Stiles started more because people wanted Stiles to have a distinct and important role in the pack and latching on to that role rather than Stiles actually fitting that role.

(Also, Stiles monitoring his Dad's cholesterol is a bit caretaker like.)

I really hated when the whole pack mom thing became a trend because it made people paint him as a nurturing, selfless martyr and stop focusing on some of Stile's more interesting qualities (like the fact that while he can be compassionate and tries to protect and care for his father and Scott, he can also be a shrewd, manipulative little shit who got his father drunk to get information out of him and was more than willing early in the first season to let Derek die when he got shot while Scott was the one who wanted to save his life). Teen Wolf fandom is very disappointing

he's much more interesting when he's shown as being someone who cares about his people and is prepared to get rid of anyone else. I thought maybe they were going to use him as the character who would kill / torture (in supernatural terms, not like be an assassin) whatever people so Scott never had to.

Are people still writing that?? I feel like that trope was popular pre-S2, and I'd have thought the amount of canon since then would have put people off of it... silly me...

I think a lot of people who are still writing it are people who are in the fandom but don't actually watch the show.

Disclaimer: I've never cared for the pack mom Stiles trope. However, as someone who loved S1, thought S2 was interesting but kind of a mess, and is very unimpressed by certain S3 developments, I really can't fault people for wanting to cling to earlier interpretations of the worldbuilding and characterizations.

Teen Wolf isn't one of my major writing fandoms, but I'm pretty sure that any additional fic I write in it is going to be at the very least canon divergent AU.

I can't stand Pack Mom Stiles but it's pretty easy for me to see what canonical traits people are drawing on. He's very much a caretaker, so it's really not that much of a leap to put him in the pack and have him assume that role for everyone in/closely associated with the pack.

Too true. I cannot get over how BAD it is -- teen genre shows can really yield quite good fiction, see BtVS back when with great stories, or of course Veronica Mars with its astonishingly fantastic fic.

But Teen Wolf fanfic is a fucking disgrace 95% of the time. It's not even pairing-specific. It's just like this fruit basket where bananas, apples, and oranges are predominantly rotten.

Any VM or BtVS recs? I'm rewatching BtVS now and plan to watch VM next (first time watching). I like all pairings on BtVS except those that include Dawn.
