This is basically every character on SPN and said character's fans. You can replace Dean with Sam, John, or Castiel and it would read the same. Hell, that is every character ever (Sherlock, Spike, Goku, that is as far back as I can think).

That being said, Dean is no worse than any of the characters on the show.

I fully agree with this, though I've got one caveat. The Dean side of fandom is basically dead these days. Dean shows up in a lot of fic still but it's mostly so he can alternatively be mean to and/or be violently over-protective towards Sam and/or Cas. Occasionally both at once! It's really rare to find someone who is a fan of Dean first and foremost and is actually still active in fandom.

That said, back in the day when the Dean side of fandom was larger? Oh, absolutely - Dean!girls were just as active and frustrating in defense of their favorite as anyone else. Maybe even moreso, because there were more of them for a while than for any other character.

But yeah, Dean's hardly worse than any of the rest. He might not be to OP's tastes and that's fine but if someone is that dismissive of him (while presumably being far more forgiving of other characters on the show) then I've got to question their take on it. Dean's done awful, terrible things and he's done wonderful, selfless things and sometimes his wonderful, selfless things are really terrible. But he's just like every other character in SPN in doing so. They're all beautifully flawed characters who love the others so much more than they love themselves and yet are perfectly capable of dealing out terrible emotional wounds.

Generally, when I see someone complaining about how ________'s fans are so forgiving of _______ even though he is an awful person, I assume that the complainer is a fan of the "opposite" character (or fandom). Complaining about rabid fans is fine (they are annoying), but when you tack on "Because _____ is awful," it makes me disbelieve your objectivity.

Exactly. Plus I always get frustrated when someone has to bash a character because said character's fans have pissed them off. Take your grief out on the fans and not the character, you know? And for that matter, take it out on specific fans that annoy you and not the entire group of fans as a whole.

Though I'm guessing that the OP is going to take the fairly mild response to their secret as confirmation somehow that all fans of Dean are rabid.

Every SPN blog I follow on tumblr is an extreme Dean girl, so they seem pretty active to me. I'm not active in the fandom, but that's literally all I see of it lol

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Name some? I'd love to meet more Dean!girls on Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm taking a break from tumblr at the moment, but I was following someone called divachester and some of the people she interacted with.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...how is divachester an EDG?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really in the fandom, but i assumed since she posted about Dean all the time and seemed to ship him with everyone that's what that meant? Is it derogatory?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, it's a derogatory term. Some fans have adopted it for themselves but it's usually meant to sneer at people who are heavily over invested in a particular character.

Try Television Without Pity. It's nothing but Sambashing from EDGs.

Dunno what fic *you're* reading.....

Stuff on AO3, mostly. I'd be ecstatic for recs - I can literally think of only one ongoing multi-chaptered fic that is focused on Dean as an individual and isn't treating him as a function of another character.

It's not like he's always treated like a terrible character in those other stories. He's occasionally villainized to benefit someone else, but not always. It's just that he's also mostly there to react to someone else, particularly with regards to their suffering. He'll alternatively scowl menancingly at someone who dares threaten *his* Sam and/or Cas or feel guilty for not protecting them better or whatever, but he'll be playing a role in their story, not really acting as a character in his own right.

I'm serious about the request for recs, btw. I've read brilliant, wonderful Dean centric stories over the years, I just don't know of any that are ongoing right now except that one.

I'm mostly reading the summer_gen stuff right now, but i'd say a good percentage is Dean-centric. There's also, always, the spnnewsletter.
And hoodie_time is Dean-centric h/c.
