This is basically every character on SPN and said character's fans. You can replace Dean with Sam, John, or Castiel and it would read the same. Hell, that is every character ever (Sherlock, Spike, Goku, that is as far back as I can think).

That being said, Dean is no worse than any of the characters on the show.

I fully agree with this, though I've got one caveat. The Dean side of fandom is basically dead these days. Dean shows up in a lot of fic still but it's mostly so he can alternatively be mean to and/or be violently over-protective towards Sam and/or Cas. Occasionally both at once! It's really rare to find someone who is a fan of Dean first and foremost and is actually still active in fandom.

That said, back in the day when the Dean side of fandom was larger? Oh, absolutely - Dean!girls were just as active and frustrating in defense of their favorite as anyone else. Maybe even moreso, because there were more of them for a while than for any other character.

But yeah, Dean's hardly worse than any of the rest. He might not be to OP's tastes and that's fine but if someone is that dismissive of him (while presumably being far more forgiving of other characters on the show) then I've got to question their take on it. Dean's done awful, terrible things and he's done wonderful, selfless things and sometimes his wonderful, selfless things are really terrible. But he's just like every other character in SPN in doing so. They're all beautifully flawed characters who love the others so much more than they love themselves and yet are perfectly capable of dealing out terrible emotional wounds.

How is he any worse than any of the other characters? Of course he's kind of a shitty person. Everyone on that show is. That's why people love the characters. Nobody likes perfection.

If not, it's certainly nothing new. Fandom is full of people who hate Dean these days. Exactly which ~rapid Dean!girls~ OP is talking about is beyond me; I can't even find five of them that are still active.

YES! What is with the rampant Dean hate these days? Like... I just don't understand what has spurred all of this on. I actually spent a fair amount of season eight being a little irked with Sam's behavior (I just sort of thought the writing for him in the earlier parts of season eight was weirdly shaky and OOC) but Dean...didn't have much to do this season, so I'm not understanding what the hate is about. It really baffles me.

Maybe the person posting that weird post about John repeatedly burying Dean alive and forcing him to dig his way out? It was quoted in the comments to that secret about why-does-everyone-hate-John-Winchester.

I think it was also mentioned in that discussion that tumblr Dean fans are particularly anti-John. So there are apparently tumblr Dean fans.

He's got a shit ton of flaws, yeah, but he's also got a lot of good points, so "crappy person" is probably pushing it.

The only way I can maybe sort of see "crappy person" is he's not someone I'd want to be around in real life, even without the enormous cloud of tragedy following him around destroying any scrap of happiness in a fifty-yard radius.

Well I agree with you. Dean Winchester is an interesting character to watch, but frankly, if I met someone like him IRL, I'd think he's a monumental asshole.

His assholeishness makes him interesting as a character, but nice person? Dean Winchester is NOT a nice person.

And I don't blame anyone who dislikes him as a character because they can see how much of an asshole he is.

Thank you! That's exactly how I see and feel about Dean. Fun on TV, in RL I'd stay as far away as possible.

From the endless insults about Sam's intellectual leanings, knocking Sam around when he feels like it, his hypocrisy (Come on Dean, YOU took a year off hunting so cut it out!), his grudge-holding, (again, going off to college is NOT betraying and abandoning your family, and he was 22 at the time), his hump 'em and dump 'em approach to women, I really dislike him.

Dean is a jackass and I don't care if people point it out. Maybe it's the way you're phrasing yourself when you criticize him? If you want to rant about Dean that's fine, but I've seen fandom rants sometimes turn into "if you like this character, you're an idiot" and nobody is going to respond positively to that.

It could also depend on who you're talking to. Dean is my ultimate favorite of the show but I don't turn that into a war against other characters because I don't hate the other characters either, I love them.

You also have to differentiate between asshole and *bad* person.
Dean's an asshole, but a good person - in as much as he tries to do good things (hunt things that kill people ect.)

He doesn't want to teach Jo to hunt because 1) he doesn't want to go against her mother's wishes 2) he's at a very different point in his character arc then and 3) there haven't been any apocalyptic events yet. Jo wasn't in a situation where not learning seemed likely to get her killed - just the opposite, actually.
