Guys help

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my first time doing a big bang (as an artist) and the fic I got is SO BAD. I mean, the storyline has some promise and the author and I are getting along well, but the writing is so bad I can't even. It's like badfic bingo. I couldn't even read a few pages of it because it was just so awful. What do I do?

If you get along with the author, you could ask which scene/character they most wanted to see illustrated and just do that without reading the rest of the fic?

Suck it up, honor your commitment, and tell yourself the next one will be better.

As suggested, ask your author what they want to see illustrated - and when you post, talk about the "exciting premise" or how interesting the idea was. or how friendly the author was - you can do all that without commenting on the fic itself. lie by omission (and hope they don't do the same about your art!0

Oh, that's a real shame. However, you did sign up, and the author could be a really lovely person, even if their fic is... uh, less lovely. The best thing to do is to honour your agreement and get it over with fairly quickly. And look on the bright side: it will probably drum up some extra interest in your art, even if the fic is underwhelming - I've found several artists' work through Big Bangs.

Suck it up. Big Bangs are mostly crap shoots in a lot of ways, and it's probably not like you were given that fic anyway. Unless your Big Bang works differently than all the ones I've participated in before, you request to be the artist for fic based on the summary. Sorry you chose a bad one, but it happens.

Also, if it really is bothering you? Create a fanmix as your piece of art. Not to poke at fanmixers, but it's definitely something you could do while being only vaguely aware of the story (no specific scene needed.) If you absolutely don't want to do that, see if you can contact the author's beta and get an art idea from them.

Ooh I'm sorry. I can't imagine. I just finished two drawings (I was a pinch hitter too) for prompts that didn't particularly inspire me and I had some unexpected rl issues so I just sort of... procrastinated and procrastinated and then just made some stuff with MS Paint. It's always hard for me to tell if something is good enough to give to someone else if I'm not personally excited about it. Luckily (?) the fest got cancelled. I'm not particularly enthused about the art but it kind of sucks to put time into something and then not get to see what people think of it.

How many pieces are you going to have to do? Maybe you could skim it until a scene catches your interest. Like I said I know it sucks when you aren't personally excited about a project but it should be fine if you just sort of illustrate a scene? Does the premise at least excite you? You could maybe focus more on the idea than the actual writing? It's not like anyone should be able to tell.

Please don't be my artist. Please don't be my artist. :D

In your case, I'd pick the least objectionable scene to illo, and do it.

I get where you're coming from, though. I've been on the other end of the scenario, where my artist's work reminded me of my ten-year-old niece's work.

You got good advice here. Ask the author what they would like to see the most, skim for as many details about that character/scene/whatever, and when you talk about doing the art, just skirt around the whole issue of the fic itself and be a little more vague. It sucks, but it's how it is.

OP

Thanks for the advice, all. I wasn't going to flake, and there's actually quite a bit about the story that I like, but I was wondering if it's against big bang etiquette for the artist to give the writer feedback or concrit on their story.

It depends on the author and also the fandom and big bang, but usually it's bad etiquette for the artist to offer concrit. If the author presses for feedback, you can just focus on the things you like and gloss over or ignore the other stuff.

It usually is. But I'd talk to the author's beta, if you get the chance; it's possible they don't have one (most Big Bangs require you to, but people obviously lie about that) and if they don't have one, strongly encourage them to get one. Say there are typos or something.
