Re: would you judge a man for using a prostitute?

Lol'ing so damn hard at all the "but it's an abusive exploitative industry built on desperate people, and furthermore I..."

You live in modern western countries. Do you seriously think you don't indulge in industries built on exactly those things and worse, every single day, in almost every facet of your life?

NAYRT

Shittily-paid Amazon temporarily warehouse workers fainting from the heat. Chocolate made from cacoa beans grown with child labor along the Ivory Coast. Tomatoes picked by workers kept under slavery conditions in Florida. Apple products assembled by employees in Chinese factories with nets around the dormitories to reduce death by suicide leap. Wal-mart employees locked in the store overnight...

I can't think of one that even comes close to using a prostitute, I really can't.

I mean I know that the fact that I'm using this computer means that I'm part of the same system that's destroying the mental health of factory workers in China. You're right. It's fucked up. But never in the course of my life - let alone every single day - have I ever taken advantage of another person's marginalization to violate their body for funsies. Not even one time.

nayrt

I think your buying a computer made by people working in unfair conditions is exactly the type of indulgence ayrt was talking about. You didn't harm those factory workers directly (much like how people who buy sex from prostitutes but don't abuse them don't harm sex workers directly), but by buying a product or service from an exploitive industry, you are only encouraging said exploitive industry to keep doing what they're doing as if that's totally fine and not ethically wrong. Basically, there's a double standard created out of ignorance and apathy in place when people will judge your moral integrity when you buy sex but not when you buy a computer. You should be judged for both.

"(much like how people who buy sex from prostitutes but don't abuse them don't harm sex workers directly)"

That's the part I don't agree with. You have sex with somebody who wouldn't consent to letting you penetrate them if they had better options, you are harming them directly. You are face to face with another person and actively deciding in that moment that getting your rocks off is more important than their bodily integrity.

I cannot imagine what kind of empathy deficit you need to be suffering to want to buy sex.

There's a slight difference between indulging in industries that abuse people without our knowledge, and being the one actually committing the abuse.

Just a slight one.

"Without our knowledge" implies that you do know however vaguely that something is unjust within the industry but you choose not to care. I don't see how that's better.

No, "without our knowledge" means lacking knowledge, or not knowing. You dumbass.

And you know that every single person raising the point about prostitution being an exploitative industry isn't aware of this? And you know personally that every single one of those people is still indulging in those exploitative industries rather than opting out some or all of the time? Good. Just wanted to check that you had all the facts here.
