I don't really know anything about this guy but yeah that sounds really, really ignorant :\ Does anyone have a link to it?

That's not what he said. People apparently can't read.

It's here, here, and here.

He's fine with adults and admires people who can make them interesting and cool in their writing.

He just doesn't like writing about them because it's not interesting for him. That's it.

I don't like writing about evil parents. Does that mean I think bad parents don't exist and that all parents are perfect? No. I just don't think it's interesting. Have I read other people writing fantastic stories with evil parents? Yes. They were great. I admire them. It's just not something I'm going to write about.

That's essentially what he's saying.

But other people took it was too far. "You're insulting your wife!" "You're pushing people to commit suicide!" Like, really? What the fuck?

the third one is definitely off-base (wtf I have never heard of a teenager committing suicide because they were worried about adulthood being boring), but in the second one he literally seems to be saying what that first anon accused him of saying:
"[adults are] just so…boring. It’s like, “Oh I have a mortgage. I buy six pairs of identical khaki pants at a time. I take care of children and watch the television program CSI.”

I admire people who can make that crap into the stuff of interesting fiction, but…yeah. No."

because that is an incredibly stupid thing to say. If he'd used a qualifier-- "MOST adults are boring" or "the adults I know are boring" or something along those lines-- it would sound different, but where it stands it reads as him saying "I'm glad I'm not an adult because they all suck"...

The key lines in the second one are, "I know and like many adults. But I don’t want to write for them. Or God forbid about them." and "I admire people who can make that crap into the stuff of interesting fiction, but…yeah. No."

He's saying living it is great but writing about it is boring, for him. I don't think it's boring but the man is allowed to have his tastes.

Again, the evil parent thing. Living it is anything but boring. It's a horrific experience. But to me, writing about it is boring.

(I'm gonna be gone for about an hour or so but will be back to reply if you want. Sorry!)

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-08-11 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm yeah I see that the qualifier is in the previous sentence-- "I know and like MANY adults" and then the second part would be that those many adults that he knows are the ones with the boring lives that he doesn't want to write about. It still reads weirdly though. I mean I'm not saying that people-- even those who write professionally-- don't frequently construct sentences that can be interpreted in ways they didn't mean, it's just that my initial reading of that statement (and, apparently, many other people's) was that he was saying that all adults are dull.

I mean I DO see his point; there are certain things I don't write about because they just seem really damn boring to me, too.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-08-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I just assumed he was saying all adults are dull for him to write about, not that they are dull in real life. This is 'cause the original question he was answering was asking about him writing from an adult perspective. But, eh.

Yeah, I can understand maybe people saying that "But adults aren't boring!" because they're not to them. Problem is that it's his tastes and everyone has different tastes.

This reminds me of people arguing over what kinds of fic are boring and what kinds are overdone and so on.

cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (pig pig PIG)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2013-08-11 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's it? People are offended because someone finds them boring? Jfc do they require reassurance about that?
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-08-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's even better. They're offended because someone find writing about them boring.

They kept reblogging this long rant that said things like he should apologize to his wife and she should divorce him if he doesn't find her interesting etc. I think "But what about the children?!" was also thrown in there.

Yeeeeaaaahhhh, on the bright side, they've probably moved on.

Every single major character in LOTR is an adult.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-08-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I can think of a hell of a lot of other books like that.

Can't he just say he doesn't like modern adult subjects? That's just fine.

But god damn does he know awful adults. Stop projecting, John Green.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-08-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I agree with you there. I generally prefer adult characters.

I think it's just that he always writes about modern subjects with kids so writing about adults would be in the same vein.

Mmm, but apparently he likes those adults and thinks spending time with them is neat? He just doesn't like writing about it. I dunno.

nayrt

mostly I just find it weird and sad because he either doesn't consider himself an adult and believes himself to be some kind of honorary teenager and makes immature generalizations about them to seem cool or he does consider himself an adult and he loathes himself for being one

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-08-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that one reads really, really weirdly. It might not be what he meant, but what he ended up saying is that all adults are joyless beings whose lives are drudgery and boring clothes ~_~

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...and I have absolutely zero inclination to pay any more attention to this person than I did before. Which consisted solely of seeing him mentioned/quoted incessantly on the Internet and not really having a clue who he was, besides the newest flash-in-the-pan YA author..

WHY is everything YA these days? What happened to writing for grownups, by grownups? I mean actual writing, that sucked you in and kept you engaged and NOT with fifty-shades-of-Ikea-sex thank you, no.

*grumble* I haven't read any decent current fiction in forever. Even the nonfiction I read isn't the greatest, these days.

/I read books hear me whine (sorry)

it's out there, you just have to dig to find it 'cause it's not what's "in" right now

Any recs for me? I have neither time nor money to "dig" unfortunately.

I am loving Alastair Reynolds rn and he's written, like, one teen character ever. He is all about the grownups and I always feel like he's respecting his readers' intelligence as he writes.

Because most adults stop reading fiction after high school, when they are forced to do so. So their reading level never improves and their tastes never change. The couple times they read a book, they're going to be comfortable with YA stuff.

That isn't an insult to YA novels--I will never stop loving Sabriel--just why I think so many adults read nothing but them.

Also: Dan Brown isn't classified as "young adult fiction" but god damn is it at a lower reading level than a lot of the YA books I used to read.

Eh I'm not even mad that most current fiction doesn't interest me. There's so much great stuff still to read in the back-catalogue of literature.

Then again I get the impression that he's not saying that boring is bad. It's boring as in "hey man isn't it great that I don't have all that emotional turmoil and weird hormonal spikes and I don't feel like I'm the worst mess that ever lived?". That kind of boring. I would have used some other, less pejorative adjective, like "calm" or "quiet", myself, but yeah. I don't get the impression that he things adults are joyless.

It seems weird to me that he is equating "adulthood" with "parenthood", specifically the middle-class suburban kind.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
That makes him sound like he lives in a bubble. Growing up, I hardly knew any adults like that and still don't, but maybe that's because I don't look at adults like that.
