It's frustrating but it happens. I still haven't went back to Mirror's Edge because there's a particular billboard that I can't hit right. Seriously, a damn billboard is keeping me from completing this game. It's this section where you have people after you so I try to ignore them and run up the board, but someone always seems to get in my way and fuck up my momentum and arg, I hate it.

Yea, you're okay anon. All games aren't for all people.

I can relate. I've been stuck at Thorny Towers in Psychonauts for ages because there's this one damn rolling jump in Fred Bonaparte's level that I just can't seem to make- and if that weren't bad enough, it's part of a fairly long platforming sequence and so every time I fail I have to start over at the beginning of the jumps.

Man, FPS games are so much easier...

This reminds me of a particular Portal room! I hate anything where you have to retry large platforming sections. I freak myself out thinking about screwing up and probably only make it worse.

Trial and error is really the only answer, and it's an unsatisfactory one.

(Did you look up a walkthrough? Sometimes those can help a bit, even when you know what you need to do.)

Yes- and youtube videos. I know exactly what to do, I just can never seem to get the timing as close as it needs me to. If I could just shortcut back to that one jump or even somewhere near it, I wouldn't mind so much, but having to do all that platforming over and over to get back to it is just woefully tedious.

Then again, if I'm having this much trouble here I don't know that I'd ever be able to beat the final level- I've heard horror stories about that one from people who are better at these kinds of games than I am.

Timing can be a real bitch in video games. It's often the trickiest thing you'll face!

Then again, if I'm having this much trouble here I don't know that I'd ever be able to beat the final level

Aww, maybe you will! I've felt that way before but ended up beating them. It can take a lot of persistence though, but sometimes you'll adapt to the difficulty level.

Man, FPS games are so much easier

Depends on your style of play, I think. I've got a buddy who still can't beat Charlie Don't Surf in CoD4 on Veteran difficulty. And another who can't beat Heat. And I'm the one of only two people I know amongst a huge crowd of gamers to manage the entirety of WaW, solo, on Veteran.

I can't argue with that. (Some FPS games are insane on their hardest difficulty setting and I don't normally go anywhere near them.)

But when I say easier I mostly mean that FPS games typically have difficulty settings and a lot of platformer type games don't. If you suck at Halo or Gears you can turn the difficulty down, but that isn't an option for all games.

They don't? I seem to recall an easy mode in the DMC games, though I might just be misremembering.

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-12 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think DMC has an easy mode, but some of the other games mentioned in this thread (Psychonauts, Portal, Mirror's Edge) don't. Of course that's a different genre of games and so it isn't terribly surprising, just saying it sucks when you aren't particularly good at one of those and get stuck.

I can't get Black Ops' Vietnam mission on Veteran. Such a paaaaain. World at War kicked my arse on regular, also.

Oh maaaan, it's the hill, right? The one you have to get down to plant the charges on the barrels? That level is legitimately Old Nintendo Hard. (Though the rest of Blops isn't bad at all.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Infinite respawn never made me so damn mad. The rest of Blops wasn't so bad, but I stopped my Veteran run because I couldn't get through Vietnam!

I'd co-op it with you if they hadn't taken co-op out for Blops >:E *grumblegrumble*

...And, uh, assuming you play on the PS3.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know -precisely- which part of the platforming sequence you're referring to, and it was one of my proudest gaming moments when I finally cleared it. Good luck on your jumps in the future!

Shit, I'm stuck at Thorny Towers too.

I'm passed that part somehow, but it still took forever because Bonaparte land is the most boring thing. Have you done the Bull land? It's the best.

Though I'm now having to climb Thorny Towers and ugh. Psychonauts has great level design, but it could be a little better here. So many "WHERE THE FUCK DO I GO" moments.

I have been stuck at the same spot in the original Portal for about two years now. I know exactly what I'm supposed to do, I just cannot get the timing down.
elaminator: (Portal 2 - Don't listen to your future s)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-12 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Urg, timing can be the absolute worst. :( There's often no way to bypass it, you just have to get it right.

Portal is bad about that. I didn't have too much difficulty with them, but there were areas where the timing was very tricky.

Is the part you're stuck at the end of this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X38qm9pO9B8 Because if it is, you don't have to have perfect timing, or go through all those portals right after the other. What I did (which felt like cheating, but whatever, I couldn't get the timing right either) was abuse the fall at the start of the room to get out of there. (Basically go back to the beginning and do the fall for each platform. There's still some timing involved but you can save on each platform, so it's easier.)

And I probably explained that in a way no one is going to understand. Oh well...maybe that wasn't even your issue.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, no. I'm stuck at the beginning of that video. I cannot get the cube, which you'd think would be the easiest damn part of that sequence to time one you work out the steps.
elaminator: (Batman: Arkham City - Bats/Cats)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
No no, that part isn't easy. I know I had a bit of trouble in that room too, it just wasn't mentionable compared to my later frustration. Hmm...did you ever get to the other side of the room? I remember having some difficulty getting the cube and leaving the room in time.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think I got there once, and then misstepped and fell. I've sort of given up for the moment, because I'm starting to suspect that part of the problem is my computer being terrible.

:( I wish I had some kickass advice for you! I tried it last night and got through it but I've played that game so much now that I should be able to beat it in my sleep. All I would say is when you try again, try to stop worrying so much about succeeding. Which I totes know isn't easy, especially after lots of failure (lol me on the final MGR boss), but it's helpful! I hope you get past it someday.

fwiw that chamber was the most difficult for me because i kept missing the first jump. literally the first one, through the portal you shoot at the wall right there. i kept placing the portal too high and didn't realise that was the issue until like an hour later.

[personal profile] saku 2013-08-12 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
there's a part in mirrors edge where you have to wall run to this crate dangling in the sky from a crane and it took me 2 days to get it bc i ragequit the first night. i kept missing the crate by inches and falling to my death. i love mirrors edge but a couple of parts can be infuriating tbh.
elaminator: (Mass Effect: Shep)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-12 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I think I remember that part. There's a part where you need to jump to a zip line from a crane too (I think) and fuck if I didn't die a lot there. Mirror's Edge is gorgeous and fun, but at least for me there was lots of dying inbetween. Like ridiculous amounts of dying. And I have no idea how I got past some of the bigger fight scenes; mostly just determination and refusal to quit. I'll try again... Eventually.
