I always get sad when people say they didn't like The Princess and the Frog. I really enjoyed it, myself. I know that there's different strokes for different folks and all, but it still kind of bothers me. I feel like people didn't really give it a fair chance because they're still wrapped up in "OMG DISNEY RENAISSANCE!!1"

People's love for the Renaissance bothers me to no end. I don't hate it too harshly, because two of my favorite Disney movies are from said era, but a lot of the films annoy me for some reason, as does the love for them. Just a personal thing.

I love a lot of the movies from the Renaissance as well, so it's not like I'm hating on The Lion King or other fine Disney classics. But I'm much more willing to give modern Disney films a chance to prove their worth to me, so to speak, than a lot of other people seem to be.

Kinda how I feel whenever someone disses Tangled.

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Tangled was super cute. I didn't like it as much as I liked TPatF, but it was still a fine piece of animation in its own right.

I feel somewhat similar.

On which point? Not trying to be rude, just curious.

You're not being rude at all. No worries.

Both? I liked The Princess and the Frog, though I do admit it could have been better. I'm also irritated by people who obsess over the renaissance as if they were the most perfect films ever. They weren't. I liked them too but they also have their own flaws.

I guess I'm just saddened by dislike for TPatF, or any Disney film, because of nostalgia reasons, rather than legitimate critique.

I agree with you entirely, actually. Dismissing any film just because it's not what you grew up with is terribly short-sighted, and it's frustrating and disappointing to see so much of the adult Disney fandom rejecting newer films pretty much just because they're new.

Honestly, I was really excited to see Disney doing a 2D animated film again, so I went into PatF expecting to like it... and then I didn't. It was a huge disappointment because I'd been so psyched up for it and then it just fell so flat for me.

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-08-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I just see a lot of people dismissing TPatF out of hand because it wasn't enough like XYZ DisRen film, and that's a little disappointing.

This. It was so beautiful, and I was so looking forward to it, and then I just spent the entire movie not caring. Well, except for the scene where Tiana gets knocked into the buffet table at the party and Charlotte's only concern is "Oh my God, are you okay? Come on, let's get you cleaned up." I got a little choked up at that, because even after all the kindness and cheer Charlotte had shown up to that point I still wasn't expecting her to put her friend first so unhesitatingly.

Oh man, that scene always makes me tear up.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-08-15 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it. It had a pair of really great musical and animation sequences that demonstrate why I'm a bit frustrated with the homogeneity of 3D modeling these days. Seriously, it's animation. It's visual art. You can tap the clean lines of early jazz graphic design or the phantasmagoric spectacle of Walt's Fantasia if you want. The animation world needs more scenes like that, and Book of Kells (modeled off of illuminated gospels), and Chico and Rita (designed off of jazz posters.)

I think Disney made some of their best films during the renaissance, but uh yeah people need to take off their nostalgia glasses and give the modern films a chance. Just because you saw it when you were five, doesn't mean it's better.
