I...99% agree. It is a really bad story, though it wasn't a critical or financial failure.

I was kind of surprised by how many people didn't like it tbh. I thought it was good. Not my favorite disney movie, but I enjoyed it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree...except for the bit about the villian song. That was one of the most boring ones imo. The *visuals* that went with it were pretty awesome - but the song itself? Basically him bragging about being the broker of a deal, and not even in a way that was that interesting - at least to me.

I don't know. I don't think TLM is that great of a film, aside from two songs. The message wasn't that great either. The second half of TLK isn't that great, either. To me, TFP was pretty much on par with the earlier films, it just had one major flaw: She's a frog for the majority of the film. The bits where she (and Naveen) were human were far more interesting than the scenes where they're frogs.

How dare you. Atlantis was magical as fuck, and remains a grossly underrated movie.

But yeah, PatF sucked. Why? Because it was about a black character, so they didn't even try, the same way Tangled sucked because they made little effort because they assumed boys not liking princesses gave the go ahead to give no fucks.

[Picture is Tiana and Prince Naveen from the animated movie "The Princess and the Frog". Tiana is a young woman with somewhat dark skin and long dark hair pulled up in a bun. She has amber-orange eyes and is wearing dark red lipstick. She is wearing a sleeveless, strapless, shiny light blue dress with white trims, long white gloves extending over her whole arms, a white necklace with a blue stone hanging from it and a silver tiara with three triangles on her head. She is holding Prince Naveen in her hand, who is frog with a wide smile showing his teeth. He is a light green frog with dark green spots on his legs, and a cream-green colored belly. He is standing on his rear legs all cartoon-anthropomorphic-like, looking smugly at Tiana, who is smiling sheepishly back at him.]

It pisses me off when fans come up with excuses as to why Princess and the Frog didn't do so well. "American audiences are racist", "Kids only like CGI movies nowadays", "People aren't interested in Disney anymore", etc.

Let's face it, the movie wasn't great. It was on par with other late Disney films like Atlantis or Treasure Planet. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad movies. But they weren't the magical, epic, memorable movies of the Disney Renaissance. Princess and the Frog was okay. But it certainly didn't bring back the magic of the Disney Renaissance in my opinion.

The songs weren't memorable (not counting Facillier's song) and didn't add anything to the plot. There were too many pointless scenes, there were too many subplots that detracted from the main plot. And there weren't any jaw-droppingly epic moments like the stamped from The Lion King or Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

It was just... an okay movie.

I always get sad when people say they didn't like The Princess and the Frog. I really enjoyed it, myself. I know that there's different strokes for different folks and all, but it still kind of bothers me. I feel like people didn't really give it a fair chance because they're still wrapped up in "OMG DISNEY RENAISSANCE!!1"

Honest to God, I've seen the movie a couple of times and I am blocking all of its songs. I guess that's how memorable the music was.

Shame really, given the setting of New Orleans. They could and should have gone balls to the wall with jazz, blues and rag time numbers. Instead of going for Newman (Again!), I would have hired Wynton Marsalis and given him free range. Imagine the classic Disney soundtrack he would have made.

I agree. It just didn't quite work for me. Holy cow Mama Odie annoyed me (but her song was my favorite, go figure). And while the dark voodoo parts' visuals were cool, I could see how children could find them really scary--even my mom was like 'yeah, that was probably too much.'

I like the movie but I do recognize it has problems.

Like, okay, on the music, I love it all but I always feel like there's just something missing and I can never tell what it is exactly. For example, I really like Almost There and think it's great but as the song goes on get this niggling feeling. To put it the best way I can that song is like dancing up a mountain for me. It's a lot of effort but once you get to the top you know there is going to be such a great payoff and release. It just takes so much energy from you that you can't wait for all that energy to just explode at some point. But instead of reaching the top of the mountain you've been aiming for, right before your reach it you're jumping and dancing and everything is looking good but the song goes "Close enough!" and you then sadly hustle back down.

I don't know if it makes any sense but that is how the song feels to me. Good song but it's missing just one, tiny, thing. I blame Randy Newman.

(Also, like people above, I liked all of the movies you mentioned.)

When I was watching it, I enjoyed it, but it felt too much like a conscious effort to recapture the magic of the older Disney fairytales - and that gave it a rather inorganic feel, though it's difficult to put my finger on it.

I agree. The two things that should have been changed (for me) should have been the setting (Far Far Away Land instead of New Orleans?) and the fact that Tiana 80% of the movie as a frog.

The hand-drawn animation on the movie, though. That was gorgeous.

Dude, Atlantis is amazing. Princess and the Frog is a sexist piece of crap that tries to sell you that a girl tht doesn't have romance in her head right now is WRONG and needs to be FIXED.

(It's sad, because Tiana is awesome, and the beginning was so promising... Almost There is one of my favourite Disney songs.)

I agree that it was mediocre, plus: I could not help it, I was mortified to discover a committee of middle-aged white guys had decided they were the people to make this very, very non-colorblind film, a fairy tale film centering around a poor New Orleans girl of color. Perhaps the film was fine, perhaps it was tastefully done, perhaps they were not wrong in doing so, but it didn't matter, it mortified me.

I am sorry I am anon for this. I just haven't had the courage to argue this one under my own name.

A part of me agrees - the movie was just mehhhhh - but a part of me wonders if the real fans aren't a bit too young to join fandom, and in ten years we'll be seeing PatF nostalgia.

Recently saw clips for TLM (my OMG, my CHILDHOOD movie along with BatB), and realized how primitive the animation is.

iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2013-08-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
But tons of super, super shitty animated movies make hundreds of millions of dollars. So uh?

I think that there are a lot of reasons that tPatF didn't make as much as expected, some of them problematic but a lot of them just related to unfortunate timing or bad marketing. As for the actual quality of the movie, it's really good and certainly better than the majority of the stuff that's put out. But it does have some flaws in the storytelling that make it a bit bumpy along the way, and that stops it from being on the upper tier of Disney for me (also there was this feeling of trying-a-bit-too-hard that's kind of difficult to explain?).

Tangled actually ended up not having those same flaws for me, and was a smooth, linear, clean film, which to me made it a big improvement over tPatF and it was definitely as good as the better films of the renaissance. So I kind of saw it as Disney gradually getting back into their groove from film to film. Wreck it Ralph was fantastic as well.

Both of the films are a lot better than Lion King though. No idea why people hold that film on some pedestal.

(Also Atlantis is fucking amazing. Treasure Planet is a hot mess though.)

I would've liked PatF more if it wasn't treated like it was some revolutionary thing. Disney didn't do anything great. They just did what they should've done 10 years ago.
