I hated Tangled. I never believed the villain was an actual threat (I totally bought her psychological hold on Rapunzel, but I couldn't imagine her effectively harming anyone else), the songs were horribly forgettable, and the hero saves the day by permanently altering the heroine's body without her consent.

you cannot be serious. he was trying to (and succeeded) in saving her from being imprisoned for life by her psychotic kidnapper just so she could save him. also, he was dying and I'm not sure he was really thinking about the whole "the hair won't grow back" thing. what the fuck is wrong with you

lmao

On the one hand, part of me thinks that your last line is some form of subtle trolling. On the other hand, I saw a few idiots on tumblr saying the same thing which means there is a slight chance you are serious. If you are serious, then I must ask if you actually watched the scene in question. I also have to ask you if you're one of those people who think the prince in Snow White is an asshole because he """sexually assaulted""" Snow White by kissing her without her consent.

I am serious, I did watch the entire movie, and it absolutely bothered me.

I will concede that it probably would have bothered me far less if I had actually believed it was the only option, but see above about finding Mother Gothel the least threatening villain ever.

but see above about finding Mother Gothel the least threatening villain ever

She actually stabbed a guy (and he would have died if it weren't for those magic tears or whatever) and threatened to keep her "daughter" chained up in a dingy room for the rest of her life with every intention of doing so. That's pretty fucked up. And it's more than some disney villains do

+1

I understand not liking her as a villain but she wasn't exactly harmless. Throughout the movie, she proved to be ruthless, manipulative, and perfectly willing get her hands dirty by hurting people who stood between her and her ticket to being forever youthful. When I was first watching the movie, I half expected it to end with Gothel having a sudden change of heart and realizing that she really had come to care for Rapunzel in the 18 years she knew her and would step aside and let her be happy but she was just kind of a monster the whole way through

I dunno if you're trolling, but the hair thing pissed me off, too. Not because I viewed it as a violation of her body, but as ruining her agency. Rapunzel was the hero, and it was her personal quest to free herself of Gothel, SHE should have been the one to cut her hair, to make that momentous choice. Instead Flynn stole that right out from under her; they couldn't even do it together, it was solely his decision. It's been decades since Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid, aren't we past the point of dudes swooping in to deal with the heroine's tormentor for her and making her the sidekick in her own fight? Princess and the Frog was lackluster, sure, but at least Tiana got to defeat Facilier in a great climax (with her boyfriend nowhere to be seen).

thank you for describing something about the movie I didn't like but couldn't describe

On the other hand, you have once again an overuse of the "violence is funny if it's female on male" trope. That fucking frying pan.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that the frying pan has been turned into Rapunzel's "trademark" of sorts. I mean, Disney has done so much to improve their image and their portrayal of women...then Rapunzel comes out and the most iconic image of her is holding a fucking frying pan. Ugh.
