Aw. That isn't that odd. Vegeta/Bulma will always have a special place in my heart. That is what nostalgia is all about!

I wish I had nostalgic childhood ships...

The closest thing I have to a nostaligic childhood ship is Snarry, but I was like 14 when I started shipping that. (And I still actively read it.)

I did like Vegeta/Bulma a lot, but only because I loved Vegeta a lot.

Yes! Squall and Rinoa. My all time favorite OTP.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I've had a few ships since then, but it's never been the same. I'm always go glad to know the ship has some support even a decade later. It never felt like it when I was there. :(

Helga's situation was so sad and depressing that I really couldn't ship it. I just kept hoping she'd get to leave her family, and get some therapy.

Pocahontas/John Smith all the way though. To hell with the history of my native state. Those two belong together.

Helga eventually marries Arnold and they have a great life traveling/they have kids/etc. So don't feel too bad :)

Really? Thank God. The city's child support services failed that girl.

I ship the heck out of Arnold and Helga, especially now that I know it was meant to be canon.

[Picture is Vegeta, Bulma and baby Tonks from the anime "Dragon Ball Z", Usagi Tsukino/Serena Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba/Darien Shields from the anime "Sailor Moon", Simba and Nala from the animated movie "The Lion King", The Joker and Harley Quinn from the animated series "Batman", Satoshi/Ash Ketchum and Kasumi/Misty from the anime "Pokémon", Squall and Rinoa from the videogame "Final Fantasy VIII", Arnold and Helga Pataki from the cartoon "Hey, Arnold!" and Pocahontas and John Smith from the animated movie "Pocahontas".]

No matter how many new fandoms I get involved with, or how many new ships I start shipping, or how many new fanfics I write, or how many new characters I get a crush on...

...The ships from my childhood will always mean so much more to me.

I'm so sorry, I couldn't do it. OTL

I can understand that. I don't seem to get into ships now the way I did when I was young. I was so unabashedly passionate back then, and now I'm just...blah. :-/

I hear you there. I think with age comes more critical thinking, especially if you write or read a lot. I do both so the more thought I put into a ship the more I learn about them, and sometimes that does tend to show me all the problems with the ship as well as the good points.

On the plus side, they're easy to write like a real, believable couple with real problems.

On the downside, sometimes that does kill the squealing fangirl that used to exist within me.

But usually I find I can still love a ship like I did when I was younger--just without the blind optimism "nothing will ever go wrong it will always work out." (That said, it means I have to REALLY love character dynamics and know they'll work out before I can ship something really hard.)

sorry, off topic, but it's really funny that you commented on this secret-- I was about to comment on it saying that i feel the same but most of my childhood ships were supports from the gba games, your avatar included, so I laughed out loud when I saw it.

hell yes. there is still a corner of my heart that goes <33333333 over Ash/Misty after all these years.

I will never not be bitter that she was practically booted from the TV show and I will also never not be bitter about Ash being forever young 10.

(Also Vegeta/Bulma is a yes for me too heehee.)

But to add to my childhood ships: Beatrix/Steiner from FFIX. I was surprised it wasn't more popular. P:

All of my old ships have a special place in my heart, I never stop shipping something even if I don't actively search out fic for the ship anymore. I still ship the same though but I think I have more ships that I like but don't feel the need to read fic for nowadays.

(Vegeta/Bulma was my first OTP and I still love them so much :D)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ash/Misty will forever own a corner of my heart, even if Ash gets rebooted back to ten years old for the next fifty years.

Sadly I seem to be going the other direction and getting crazier with my OTPs as I get older...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably the most vanilla list of ships I have ever seen.

I don't think I actually shipped anything until I was a teenager, and pretty much all of those ships have been abanodoned as I've started shipping those characters with other characters/realized that they were a bad or boring couple.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's totally cool. I went and read a whole bunch of fics of older ships today, and have for the past two weeks tbh.

I won't call it a "childhood" ship, but Vegeta/Bulma has an interesting place in my heart as the ship I shipping before I discovered slash (which I found while hunting for more V/B fic).

Meanwhile, Usagi/Mamoru is very much a current ship for when my side-reading wanders into Sailor Moon.

Squall/Rinoa though... I never really got that one. Oh, I would rather read fic where Rinoa is treated nicely (which is bloody rare since most of the slash fandom seemed to hate her and want her to die in a fire), but while the game convinced me that fanfic was treating her terribly, it failed to convince me that she and Squall would last all that long. I was probably charitable when I gave them six months too, but I prefer to think of them peacefully accepting they don't work romantically and deciding to be friends (and Squall stays her knight, just a knight who is her best friend).

All the rest, I've never thought about.

As for my own ships, a fun one I am still somewhat attached to? Sarevok/Imoen.

Oh, and I won't ever call them "childhood" ships because I didn't get online until I was 23, so I didn't start actually shipping until after that. Pairings I liked before that were just... pairings I liked.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
When I played FFVIII, I talked to some random NPC (in Galbadia Garden, i think?) who said he'd heard that sorceresses could brain wash people. So I like to think that Rinoa, without knowing what she was doing, made Squall into fall in love with her when she got her sorceress powers, just before she fell into her coma. Because she was really, really scared and really, really wanted him to keep her safe, and making him love her was the best way. That's why Squall changed so suddenly, and that's why he couldn't see her face clearly in time compression the way he could his friends', because she wasn't really supposed to be in his thoughts the way his friends were, she'd forced herself in there.

Then after the game they realize what's happened, Rinoa feels terrible, they fix things and become dear friends instead.

Here, have my thoughts on Squall/Rinoa even though you never asked for them.

Yay for Ash/Misty (Satoshi/Kasumi)! When I was younger I shipped those two so hard. They're one of my biggest ships. I used to read fanfic and look at Japanese fanart all the time (it was actually because of Pokeshipping that I found my first Japanese fanart sites)... I still remember how I used to check Be Happy (by Teppo) and Miyabic Room all the time for new Ash/Misty fanart! And there used to be an English AAML site as well... ahh, good times.

Thanks for the nostalgia trip, OP. ♥

I've always thought I had no ships when I was a kid. Then I saw your secret and Helga with Arnold and remembered that I shipped them for some fucked up reason.
I say "fucked up" because nowadays I'd be against shipping a stalker with their prey. Having been stalked excessively for almost two years it just feels a bit too real to me. I can't even laugh at Helga's little Arnold shrine anymore, because a similar thing existed for me.

Curiously enough I can't hate Helga. She's still one of my favorite cartoon characters ever.

I will NEVER get over Jonny Quest and Jessie Bannon. They are constantly in my head falling in love a million different ways.
