Re: Types of people you can't stand...

The type of religious people that think not believing in some sort of god means a person has no morals or is ignorant.

There was this one woman who would not stop harassing me about joining her church. She kept making up bullshit stuff like "Somethin can't come from nothin'. That bench came from somewhere!". I kept telling her "No thank you. No thank you. Please leave me alone." But nooooope. Eventually I told her I'm too old for fairy tales and to fuck off. She still randomly tries to convert me when she sees me at the train station.

THIS.

Ughhhhh I was taught at what was basically a fundamentalist Christian school, and so many of the people there thought that anyone not Christian was basically immoral and evil.

But on the flipside, I can't stand the type of non-religious people who sneer at anyone who's religious/spiritual, and considers them to be ignorant, primitive or stupid.

Religion and spirituality don't automatically preclude free thought and intelligence.

This. You can't judge people based on what they do or don't believe. Period.

Incredible.

Tell her the bench came from the factory. Then tell her to look up Matthew 23:15 in that Bible she's banging away on. As she is doing that, ask her if she follows Jesus (her answer will be yes). As she is reading the verse in question, ask her if she believes everything Jesus says. (Bonus points if she has a red-letter Bible, this will be even more effective.) Once she says yes, ask her what Jesus would think about her trying to convert you, based on what He says in that verse.

Hasn't failed me yet. (I'm Christian, by the way, and cannot tolerate the Bible-bangers, either.)

DA

Fellow Christian, thank you for that verse! It will be handy in warding away the people at the mall who wave signs and yell at me as I pass by.

AYRT

You might not get them to stop yelling long enough to point this out to that type. Props to you, if you can, though!

I have long said that the best defense one can offer to these so-called Christians is actually reading the Bible, instead of cherry-picking over one or two verses, and twisting them out of context to make them say the opposite to what the good book actually says in the first place.

...mind you, I also read widely varying translations on a regular basis, so the KJV-Onlyers probably want to burn me at the stake, as well, IDK. :P

I've brought up stuff to her before, she dismisses everything as just "From the old testament, so it no longer matters, 'cause Jesus!"

...which is when you want to point out that Jesus actually is the "God of the Old Testament," He said so Himself, John 8:58. Also, John 1:1-5, if you need another citation for her.

On second thought, don't do that, it might make her head explode....

correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't jesus referring to phariseeism and other non-christian beliefs there? he was speaking out against proselytism of other religions, not christianity, wasn't he :?

As far as she believes, the OT doesn't matter, only the NT. So she's basically impossible to reason with

That bench came from somewhere!

Even as a metaphor, that doesn't really work because even if you don't believe in God you believe things came from something. That's the whole point of evolution.

I mean, I'm Christian but people like that drive me nuts.

And the people who come at you with Pascal's Wager like it's this brilliant new idea that they just thought of all by themselves, and has any sort of persuasive value whatsoever.

I am Matt. 23:15!anon from above. It has personally been my experience that evangelical Christians and hardcore (preachy) atheists are flip sides of the exact same, extremely(sorry bad pun) poisonous literal-mindedness.

Um... can I respectfully ask you what exactly your goal was with this comment? Please look at it from my perspective for a moment. I made a comment on a thread about types of obnoxious behavior, and as far as I can tell (please correct me if I'm wrong), my comment was not hateful or proselytizing. Then you respond to me, essentially saying, "Yeah, and people on your side do the same thing!" Why is this your response? What are you hoping to accomplish? I'm genuinely confused, because your phrasing does not seem to indicate that you are attempting to be antagonistic, but that's what the content of your comment achieves.

I think the absolute worst is when they pity you. And imply that something horrible must have happened TO MAKE YOUR LOSE YOUR FAITH IN A LOVING GOD. Or something,

Dude. I like being an atheist.

Yeah, nothing burns my biscuits worse than when people ask, all sympathetic-like "What did God ever do to you so bad to make you hate him?"

I've never been angry at a deity. It's people claiming to represent some deity while acting like jackholes who catch hostility from me.

Re: Types of people you can't stand...

Uuugh I hate when people assume I've lost faith in god. I've literally never believed in god. I was raised without religion, never taught anything one way or the other about it, never even taught was atheism was. I only ever learned about religions and atheism through friends and he internet. I grew up with the default.

Or, just as bad, if a negative experience HAS jaded you to the idea of a loving god they pity you because can't you see how bad God feels about that too? Why won't you let God comfort you? Uuuuggghhhh.

I know what you mean. Granted, in my case a lot of bad shit did happen to drive me away from the church at large, but I chose atheism years after all of that went down for reasons that were, for the most part, completely unrelated and had more to do with my personal feelings and views. It does get old having to explain that over and over, but at the same time, I get where concerned Christians are coming from on this issue. I understand that, even though I consider atheism to be a happy and positive choice for me, religious people generally aren't going to see it that way. Sure, it's annoying having someone pity me for something I'm actually pretty happy about, but if I know they really care about me and they're not just looking to get a notch on their Bible for bringing me back into the fold, I can put up with it.

As a person who has known both religious and atheistic/agonistic friends, those types of people make me want to hurl and shout "Didn't God (Allah) said that you have to be respectful and kind towards others?!"

She is a butt.

In that vein, I hate those yelling people with the signs who are constantly telling me I'm going to hell because I'm full of sin.

I'm just like... so are you?

They do not understand how sin works. They think that becoming Christian makes them sinless. Um, no, it just means Jesus uses a loophole to ignore your shitty sins. But you're still sinful. Thinking that because you converted that you're perfect now makes me itch with anger. And then these same people will go on to say the only perfect person was Jesus and I have to wonder if they ever listen to the stuff that comes out of their own mouth. Do they ever really think about their religion at all? Do they not see their own contradictions? By acting like they're sinless perfection they just- ugh. Whatever. You get my point.

And before anyone gets up my butt for being a meaniepants to these people I'm Christian. So by their logic I should be sinless and perfect and going to heaven. Except they just told me I was going to hell. So! Paradox, I guess.
