Wow. People really hate Felicia Day. What's up with this she seems lovely.

Because she's everywhere and is considered some kind of stand-in for the ideal nerdy woman (conventionally attractive and likes whatever you like, Male Viewer Between 18-34!)

I mean that isn't fair to Felicia Day--she's probably perfectly nice--but her fans can be really fucking creepy sometimes.

Yeah, it's pretty much this, for me. She's lovely, but I just want less of her loveliness all up in nerd fandom. Fill those spots with different nerdy women.

I think there's been ONE anon who has been screaming on all FD posts that she's a "slut", ugly, etc and all around trolling.

Say what you will about her acting/writing abilities, but she is the sweetest person and I judge people who hate her.

I do *raises hand* but I'm not that anon. Judge away, IDGAF. I'm allowed to not like overhyped celebrities.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it's really weird to me to hate someone for that.

I can get being sick of someone. I can get wishing that other people would get face time. I can get no longer watching the things that someone is in because you've just seen too much of them lately.

But I don't get hating, especially when that someone isn't actually a bad person.

Shouldn't you re-direct that hatred to the people who are over-hyping her? She had done literally nothing to aggravate you other than create content that has pleased lots of people you seem to dislike. If you have issues with how those people behave, that's reasonable, but hating on her is stupid and immature. You're actually blaming her for something she has no control over.

I met her at a con - she really is lovely. But people can hate her all they want - to each their own.

Well, part of it is probably the deeply misogynistic parts of the Internet being deeply misogynistic.

The rest of it is probably mostly just the Internet Internetting the way the Internet always Internets. The same basic cycle of hype, hype backlash, annoying fans, Internet commentariat controversy, that whole thing. Not that I'm saying any one side of it is right or wrong - just that it seems like the same basic process that the Internet goes through with everything. Things get hyped up, the hype gets backlash and people get annoyed with the fans, it all becomes fodder for the endless mill of discussion and expression that is the Internet, and once it's there it never leaves. More than anything else, I don't think it's anything wrong with people - what's up with Felicia Day is just how shit operates on the Internet now. At least within a certain segment of commentators, including more or less everyone on here.

I like Felicia Day - though it still rubs the wrong way that, in a post about how there needs to be Strong Women more often [which I completely agree with] she felt the need to throw in a comment about how 'They don't have to be lesbians!'

Because, you know. Apparently all Strong Women in the media these days are lesbians, or something?

Well, no, but media conceptions of "strength" are usually tied in with "masculinity," and "masculine" women are usually portrayed as being lesbian -- which, frankly, is offensive to women of all orientations.

I'm not arguing that. But when it's phrased in way that comes off kind of 'THERE ARE NO STRONG STRAIGHT WOMEN ANYMORE!' it rubs me the wrong. Doubly so when the main franchise she's talking about has *never* had a LGTB character on it.

DA Agreed. And it's not like there's a glut of "strong" lesbian characters, hell, they are TERRIFYING to most straight people especially men. Any lesbian characters that do show up in mainstream entertainment must be super non-threatening girly, or somehow beaten down or criminal.

For a moment there I thought you were talkign about some kind of day-day like children's day or awareness day.
