Reading these responses to a largely harmless secret, I don't blame you for not saying this un-anon, OP. What the hell? People need to chill out. I'm sure there are crazy abusive Destiel fans because while I've had the good fortune not to meet any, they've really upset a friend of mine. But there are people calling you disgusting for something that's literally not hurting anyone. I don't get it.

I ship Destiel too, but I don't think it'll be canon, I think they'll keep teasing us for viewership figures and then give them nice, and most importantly heterosexual, storylines. I would love to see a gay relationship on such a mainstream TV show where the point of the characters isn't just their being gay, where they're simply two men who happen to be in a relationship, but I doubt spn will be the place to make that happen. Especially given their track record with other politically sensitive issues.

Ever since the Misha interview came out that said Cas would not be sexing a guy Dean this season, the nutters have been out in full battle armor. "Ew, a smelly, evil vagina will ruin Cas!" "How could they let some slut near Cas?!" "OMG DONE WITH THIS SHOW, SOME RANDOM WHORE HAS CAS!" etc. I'm not even paraphrasing that much either, go check the tumblr tags, it's disgusting.

If you're in the SPN fandom, you kind of have to deal with cis-heterosexual womenn hating on other women/claiming they're for the equal rights!!1one because it gets in the way of their fappy times. So, honestly, I'm glad that they aren't getting what they want.

Oh yeah, I mean that's a rampant issue with most straight-female-dominated fandom in general, because it inevitably leads to slash which also inevitably attracts people who are there for the wrong reasons and/or taking out their internalised shit on other women. And if it's as prevalent in the fandom as you say, then I don't blame people for associating it with the ship, but I do think the reaction of instant rage as soon as the ship is mentioned might be a bit much. On one hand I know everyone's patience wears thin eventually, on the other it's one of the biggest ships in the fandom, so the probability of there being a variety of people, nuts and not-nuts, liking the ship, is high (help, I can't stop using commas).

If we look at the source material, it has a horrendous track record with female characters, and that was an issue before fans had much influence on the writers. So I'm not really surprised there is so much misogyny in the resulting fandom.

That said, it annoys me that 1. There are crazy people and 2. They give everyone a bad name to the point where people automatically react with rage.

It's things like that that makes me glad Hot Dwarves came about at the time they did.

At least I can sit back and happily ship Hot Dwarves knowing their canon is a (mostly) closed book.

I wouldn't call someone disgusting for liking Dean/Castiel, but I am really sick of the fandom. I hate that all of these people are insisting it is canon, when it is not and highly likely never will be. I hate that so many people feel the need to bash female characters just on the off chance that they might become love interests (Bela, when her character was announced, before she had even appeared once), or when a love interest is announced but with no details (the Castiel/woman story that will happen this year). I hate that it seems like people only care about queer rights when it is two attractive white males that they can get off thinking about, rather than caring whether I, a woman, could get married to my girlfriend in real life.

So, yes, this secret bothered me, didn't seem all that "harmless" at all. For lots of reasons.

But Bela was before Castiel was even on the show, so... I know what you mean, but it's unfair to put that all on the Dean/Cas shippers when the Dean/Sam shippers were doing it ages earlier.

Also, not every Dean/Cas shipper is like this, and it makes me sad when people assume just because you ship Dean/Cas, you're a delusional, crazy-ass, woman-hating, rabid fangirl. :( Because I just like the idea of them, while never once thinking they would ever be canon. And I like things like Dean/Bela too!

AYRT

Oh, I am well aware that Bela was before Castiel was on the show. But her treatment is not unusual in the treatment given to female characters on the show. As I said, I see the unnamed female love interest Castiel is going to get next season getting the same treatment. And Lisa and Ruby and....

I am also aware that not every Dean/Castiel shipper thinks the ship is canon. And that not every Dean/Castiel shipper hates the female characters. But I have seen it enough that it bothers me. Actually, pretty much all but my little corner of fandom that I have carved out for myself bothers me. Not everyone is a delusional misogynistic fan, but enough of them are that I try to avoid all of them as best I can. And as soon as I see a sign that someone might be such a fan (like insisting Dean/Castiel is canon), I try to avoid them.

I can certainly understand wanting to avoid that sort of thing, I do it myself... I pretty much avoid SPN fandom in general and just read the fic I want. I would just like to point out again that it's not limited to people who ship Dean/Cas, the Sam/Dean shippers are just as bad, if not worse, when it comes to female characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the Sam/Dean shippers can be horrific. As I experienced back in Season 3, daring to be a Bela fan. However, they seem to be not as prevalent anymore, as the vast majority of SPN fans I see now are Dean/Casiel. Thus, the vast majority of crazy and/or awful fans I see are Dean/Castiel. It's just a numbers thing. And also based on numbers, there are likely more decent Dean/Castiel fans than those of other ships; it's just they don't tend to be as vocal or noteworthy, so the awful ones get my (and presumably others') attention more.

TBH, I pretty much dislike the majority of TPTB and the majority of vocal fans I've seen, of both Dean/Sam and Dean/Castiel. (And it is not even confined to the SPN fandom; althojgh I do see it a lot there, even as I try to avoid it. Other fandoms have issues too.) It's why I stay in my own little, teensy-tiny, female-friendly corner of fandom and try not to venture out too much.

No-one has called OP "disgusting". They think OP is on a hiding to nothing and it clearly is hurting someone. Them.

I was referring to this (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/859507.html?thread=677678707#cmt677678707) and a few other hostile-sounding comments.

I don't agree with OP, I doubt it will become canon because they will have too much to lose and I am under no illusion that the writers care about the ship as anything other than a way to keep slash fans interested. But some of the comments were unnecessary imo.
