...Derek was badass. Like once.

Okay, yea, the show refuses to let him win fights or be the least bit happy for more than five minutes; I feel bad for the guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
He always leaps down stairs in the most badass way.
elaminator: (Teen Wolf: Issac & Erica)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, it's certainly more dramatic than just walking down the stairs. I always laugh at it but he has to keep up the tough guy image somehow.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, stairs are Derek's mortal nemesis! The one time he ended up on them they broke his back in like six places. That's why he has to always jump over them.
elaminator: (Teen Wolf: Scott & Stiles - Brother)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-19 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I shouldn't be laughing so hard at this

Not even stairs. Derek can't even have stairs. Nothing is safe for him. Not fighting, not sex, not simply existing...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
At least he has his Henleys!

Until some witch casts a curse on them that slowly poisons him with wolfsbane. Or something.

Oh, no, don't tell me he's still succumbing to The Worf Effect? I haven't started Season 3 yet and I was hoping he'd be past that.

Oh man...

You're in for some major disappointment. Derek is the biggest butt monkey to ever butt monkey; his life actually gets worse in season 3. You may ask yourself how that's even possible, but oh, believe me, it is.

I'm so tired of the writers shitting on Derek. So tired.

Jesus. I just facepalmed so hard I think I gave myself a concussion. Goddamnit, writers.

This season has been a mess all around tbh. Convoluted, not enough character development (esp of the newer characters) or explanations, seemingly forgotten plot points...idk, I know the other seasons had their issues as well, and while there are things I've liked about it, overall it feels like they just tried to do too much and failed. I'm hoping the second half of the season is better.

I'm also probably expecting too much from the show, to be quite honest.

I've got a friend who told me she likes this season more than the first two, but I don't think Derek is her favorite character like he is one of mine. It sounds like they've bitter off more than they can chew (lol) with the whole Alpha Pack plotline, but I expected that when they introduced it (like, why couldn't it have been a normal pack looking for new territory? Why some over-ambitious Super Pack?)
elaminator: (Teen Wolf: Stilinski's being angsty)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-08-19 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Derek is one of my favorites too, which is partially why this season was so painful for me. Not entirely, but it does factor into my opinion. Though tbh I don't think this has been a particularly good season for anyone...it was incredibly bleak and made everyone look and feel helpless, plus a lot of the characters were underused or had a lot of wasted potential.

I suspect the writers thought a normal pack wouldn't be ~dramatic~ enough, or as much of a threat. They wanted to keep raising the stakes, which I can understand, but I don't think they did enough with the alpha pack and they didn't come off as particularly interesting. (Threatening? Uh...sometimes, but most the werewolves of Beacon Hills can't handle themselves on a good day, so that isn't saying much.)

Still, I'm hoping this is it for most of them.

I think trying to up the stakes from the impenetrable god-lizard who could only be defeated by the power of love was a bad idea. It was about time to lower the stakes in that case, lol.

That said, like you, I do hope it gets better. Sigh. I guess it's about time to finally watch Season 3. Wish me luck, haha.

I like you.

And if I understand correctly, season 3 is actually 24 episodes long, so it's only (almost) halfway over. Still, it seems they've wrapped it up in a way where it feels more like a season finale than a mid-season finale.

I hope you like it! Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised? ...IDK.

Good. Fucking. Luck. You're going to need it.

Though I have been wondering how the season would feel watching it marathon style. I just can't give enough shits to actually do so.

I feel like for every episode this season that we saw we were missing one and a half episodes.

It does feel like huge chunks of this season happened off screen. Character development, relationship development, lots of things. Just stuff that was mentioned then never followed up on, or things that suddenly happened that made no fucking sense without any further back-story. IDK, maybe my vision of the third season is fairly skewed, but...it didn't do much for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
The third season was pretty flawed. I don't know that it was worse on a whole than the first two, which were also pretty flawed, because it was messed up in different ways. I feel like they did a far better job with Scott this season (or at least I no longer wanted to sleep through all of his scenes) and I'm thrilled I didn't have to watch a single lacrosse game, but on the other hand...

There's the big ????? that's Cora. There's anyone believing a damn thing Peter has to say. There's the frankly gross treatment of Boyd. The BAM they're a couple of Danny/Ethan and Lydia/Aiden, so many unanswered questions and, ugh, IDK. At this point I'm less than enthused about the finale and/or 3b.

When?

Honestly, though, poor Derek, every terrible damn thing that happened in Beacon Hills is directly tied to his actions. Mostly because he fails at everything he even attempts. Like, I'm pretty sure the only reason he hasn't died from accidentally slitting his own throat shaving is because his werewolf healing keeps him from dying when he does it.

lmao

oh god

That's more accurate than I'd like to admit.

every terrible damn thing that happened in Beacon Hills is directly tied to his actions

It is, though. It really is. Everything bad happens because of Derek's existence. The poor guy can't take a shit without someone betraying him or causing some accidental death. It's just the way things are. I'm hoping things change for him soon because I like him and he has good intentions, and it's just so depressing to see him try to pull himself up and get kicked while he's down again and again. Like, just let him have something. Just once. Let him turn his life around! Otherwise...what's the point of keeping him around? (And I say this as someone who would never want to see him leave the show, but god, why would the actor want to stick around for several more seasons of this?)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Preach it. Like...they've made their universe SO SMALL by making Derek the cause of every bad thing. His contrived man-pain made huge chunks of the last season almost un-watchable (hopefully to be redeemed by the finale?).

And the worst part is that Hoechlin seems like a decent actor, really. If they'd give him actual shit to work with, I think he could work with it. But as it is...IDK, I wouldn't be heartbroken if he went to find a job that didn't make him the epicenter of the shitstorm of sadness and woe.

I honestly don't think the writers see this. Or maybe they do and just don't care. I'm not sure which is worse tbh, but what they did with Cora was just...arg. On top of everything else this season, that pissed me off so much. WHY YOU DO THIS JEFF

Let Derek have something other than pain. It gets old, and it becomes a thing, and it isn't clever or fun, it just comes off as kind of embarrassing and poor writing. Find something else to do with him! (And seriously, find other ways to bring new antagonists in. It seems they did that last episode so I hope they stick to it.)

I've never seen Hoechlin in anything else, but I don't have an issue with his acting. They just need to do something else with his character now so the poor guy can have some fun/something interesting to do.

I wouldn't be heartbroken if he went to find a job that didn't make him the epicenter of the shitstorm of sadness and woe.

I wouldn't blame the guy, not in the least, but I would be heartbroken. Because he's so very, very pretty, and Derek deserves something good in his life, and I'd love to see him interact with the rest of the cast in meaningful ways while he is NOT getting shit on. COME ON TEEN WOLF, YOU CAN DO IT.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Also, the fact that all shitty things lead back to Derek is actually straining the bounds of believablility for me.

And I am willing to give a show about teenage werewolves A LOT of leeway with the believability.

spoilers for all of teen wolf, including season 3

When?

Oh, and... I thought it was pretty damn cool when he protected Stiles from Isaac, but then again that didn't require much effort on his part. (Still, it looked neat!)

Derek just can't win at fights though, unless it's against Scott or his betas. The railroad scene with him fighting Isaac and Erica made the two of them look incompetent, so while Derek came out on top...it wasn't exactly impressive.

And he holds his own against Scott? But he's been a werewolf his whole life and Scott clearly hasn't, so that isn't exactly something to brag about either.

Fucking hell show, I want to make Derek look badass, WHY WON'T YOU LET ME?!

...

Uhhhhhhh, okay, he was kinda badass when he just stood there and let Boyd and Cora claw him this season (wasn't it Boyd and Cora?)? Granted, he didn't really do anything, but I find that kind of selfless sacrifice all kinds of attractive.

(But it isn't just him. Scott and the rest of the gang are pretty incapable of taking out any of the major baddies, too.)
