DeviantART you disappoint me...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So in the complaints forum I posted a vent about people who complained and flamed over things in fics (or art but mostly fics) that were warned or obvious, like complaining about the presence of OCs or a ship.

I specified in my rant that I didn't mind it if they had ACTUAL critique and I love ACTUAL critique, but just complaining in the vain of "take this down " or "get off the internet" . I basically said "you do realize that critiquing tends to work a lot better and you get people to listen to you/

I ended up arguing with someone who thought they shouldn't even have to SPECIFY what they didn't like. he / she didn't care about helping people with critique and just wanted to say whatever. I knew the internet was rough but I never imagined being called a "bloody cunt" for asking people to give actually helpful and useful critique.

Maybe I worded myself wrong.

Is there an art website where there are less people like this?

*I basically said "you do realize that critiquing works a lot better and you get more people to listen to you if your first approach isn't "you suck get the fuck off the internet".

I'm sorry that you had that experience. It's frustrating when people take critiquing as "I can say whatever nasty things I want to."I'd be happy to help critique your piece if you're still up for it.

As for websites, I've heard good things about conceptart.org's critics, but it's more for people who are really serious about getting into the art industry rather than say people who draw more casually.

Pixeljoint seems pretty good, too, but it's limited to pixel art.

Thanks and I'd love that a lot, if you want. :) I write a lot of fanfiction and do comicing. A bit of my artwork would be :

Yeah I dunno if I'm doing it professionally just for fun so I don't think those would really apply.

not anon you replied to

you seem to have a decent grasp on bodily proportions, and you have a general good anatomy apart from the human head (although you at least put the face's parts where they belong, so you're already one step ahead than from others I've seen :V), but there is still a certain 2D-ness or flatness to your drawings where there should be depth.

I would suggest trying this exercise:

http://www.posemaniacs.com/thirtysecond

Forcing yourself to focus on the general shapes of the limbs and torso and so on when they are in certain positions in order to meet the 30 second requirement makes your subconscious start incorporating those when you actually look at real life objects, which should start giving a sense of depth to your drawing process as you practice more,

Also, do that in combination with the stuff from this tutorial:

http://fox-orian.deviantart.com/art/Perspective-Composition-Pt-1-118068853

try the methods they suggest that with simple landscapes first, and then move on to applying those concepts to human bodies, and you should see your art getting a better shape

That tutorial also touches on composition, which should help you polish your comic paneling some more (it's not bad, but there are some mistakes there in how to position the people and how to center things that you are making. those are super common mistakes, though -- it's actually rare for comic writers and drawers to notice they are making them, they just get the sense that the comic could look better yet but can't quite put their finger on how)

you already have a good base, though, you just need to combine it with a better sense of three-dimensionality and composition rules to give your art that "oomph"

Also, your colors seem pretty okay so far, but don't be afraid to experiment later on!

Thanks so much!

I did always get the feeling that I was missing something but not sure what. That will help me so much.

I had been working on perspective and was struggling with it so the tutorial will help a lot too.

Thanks for the critique. I've bookmarked the one site so I can try that more often.

if you want to make deviantart a tolerable experience, start by avoiding the forums

Yeah....I think I'll do that now. My interaction with the forums has been kinda unpleasant.

I was once called all sorts of horrible things for saying I was in a happy relationship. It wasn't even like a rubbing-somebody's-face-in-it response - just an isolated comment in a general thread elsewhere. Cue the flames!

The internet is nuts, man. I don't know if I can help you because the only other art site I know of is pixiv, which doesn't seem to have much of an English-speaking userbase, and I don't even know if comments are enabled for individual works...

Wow ...seriously?

That's awful, I'm sorry.

and I guess another site is not what I need, I just need to spend less time in the forums here.

DA users generally don't know what critique is, and those that do don't say anything because they don't want to deal with those that don't.

There are websites where you can get critique but they generally aren't very fandom oriented, like conceptart.org or cg society.

I'd recommend making friends with a few good artists (they don't have to be amazing artists, just ones that are trained enough to have a good eye) so you can ask them to critique your work. I went to art school so I never needed to rely on sites like DA for critique, and even out of art school I still have a network of talented people who can help if I need it.

I see. Thanks

I have a some friend a couple being pretty decent fandom artists. Though we usually keep to ourselves for stuff not related to fandom. Also I do have some from an outside group ( quite a few have a da). I was just kinda shocked people reacted that way to proposing critique that works better.

Last time I try to criticize the internet's much loved tradition of needless GIFT.

I'd suggest contacting them if you ever need critique, as long as you're nice about it they won't mind.

But as someone says upthread if you want to have a pleasant time on DA, don't visit the forums. And ignore comments that are someone mad about a pairing or about what you're drawing.

The majority of people I interact with on DA are pretty nice, but I tend to not engage with people who make rude or stupid comments. The site is full of people of all age ranges and all artistic levels, so you never know who is going to make comments to you and what their maturity level is.
