I can sort of understand that athletes do not want to boycott. Most athletes just have a very limited span of time in which they peak and have a shot at being the best. That being said, I do believe some sort of sanction against Russia is in order. Things are really getting out of hand there, up to the point of vigilantes now beating up LGBT people on the streets. I just saw a clip of it today. I really wish I hadn't, to be fair.

The short shelf life of one's competitive career definitely applies to figure skating. Weir's not even 30 yet but by figure skating standards he's already "old".

He's recently stated that if it takes him getting arrested to shine light on this crappy law, then so be it. I say power to him for taking a stand.

I would not expect an athlete to boycott the Olympics because, as you said, short "shelf-life" for most sports and given the prestige of the event.

I, however, will not be watching, nor will I be buy any merchandise and I will be encouraging everyone I know to avoid watching or buying merchandise.

This is my feeling. I get that the money and time that you have to put into training in order to be world class makes every Olympics a once in a lifetime opportunity, but there are a lot of scary stories coming out of Russia and I don't feel like the IOC is doing enough to address the matter. Plus, it's not clear if gay athletes are potentially in danger themselves once they travel into Russia.

I suspect the *athletes* will be relatively safe. I seriously doubt anyone whose going to watch and falls into unfortunate stereotypes will be though, even if they turn out to be straight.

Athletes for the Olympics are granted a special brand of diplomatic immunity, since they're essentially ambassadors for the two weeks they're there.

One problem with this: Putin and his supporters are currently pushing an anti-american agenda. Push too far and they're (even more) able to say gay rights are an "american import." That wouldn't help.

1. His willingness to be arrested is pretty damn awesome.
2. If he wins, it'll be a pretty nice 'eff-you', yes yes?

[Picture is the American figure skater Johnny Weir. He is a young man with light skin and short dark hair. He is wearing a cream-colored fur coat and a brown military hat, while making a military salute with his index and middle fingers pointed a bit over his head, at the height of his forehead. He is standing indoors, next to a bookshelf, and tilting his head back.]

I'm glad he's not boycotting the winter Olympics. Not because it shows support for LBGQT rights but because I just want him to get another shot at the gold medal.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't fault his reasoning but there's no way he's going to win.

It will be hella fun if he's the subject of a judging scandal, though.

lol. There's no way he's going to win.

To be honest, there's no way he's even going to make the Olympic team.

Due to US Men's non-spectacular performance at World's last year, there are only two spots. Johnny is way out of shape and hasn't competed much at all since Vancouver. My guess for the US Mens representatives? Max Aaron and Jeremy Abbott (... providing Jeremy manages to not be a head case at nationals).

I have to agree it's unlikely, but figure skating (like gymnastics) is a sport where you can never assume someone's going to be able to perform at any particular time. The injury rate is astounding.

He's not going to win, but I wouldn't totally outrule him making the team. He could have a knockout performance at nats (or even a pretty decent one with everything else bombing) and place and I have no doubt they'd send him if he did. He'd bring a ton of attention to Team USA.

That being said, the state of US singles skating is just... kind of dismal on the whole. It's so depressing.

(But at least we have ice dance.)

Eh... The USFSA doesn't really like Johnny. So if they can get out of sending him... they will. So yeah. Johnny would have to place 1st or 2nd at nationals to go. And honestly idk. Max Aaron is pretty good. Jeremy Abbott can be AMAZING when he doesn't implode. Evan is apparently attempting a comeback so who knows how that will go. And even Ross Miner can be decent.

US Mens singles is a disaster.

US Pairs is just... it's best if we don't talk about it.

US Womens has some up and comers, but idk if they'll be at their peak in time for Sochi.

US Ice Dance, however. HEARTS IN MY EYES FOR MERYL AND CHARLIE. The Shibtanis are great with the right programs. Madison and Evan are pretty good too.

Oh no he'd definitely have to place first or second.

But yeah I've noticed they don't really like him either, but I think NBC would eat his presence right up and I have a hard time believing they aren't at all influenced by what the television networks want.

MERYL AND CHARLIE ARE AMAZING. Gosh I just want them to take the gold so badly.

Just butting in to say AWWWWWWWWW JOHNNY *hugs his weird, blessed little soul*

[personal profile] kazokuhouou 2013-08-22 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
There's no way they'll even let him on the team. There are only two spots and they wouldn't want to risk a PR disaster and would rather pick someone that will toe the line.

If what's his orange face doesn't go to defend his gold, which, I dunno. Guy seems to get injured regularly.

Are you kidding? If he placed high enough at nationals they'd totally send him. It would draw huge amount of attention to Team USA to send him a) because he's a lot better known than any of the other options save Evan and b) because he is so flamboyant about his sexuality and has made such bold statements. Considering that the Olympics are a lot about $$, and considering that NBC has already promised to discuss the anti-lgbtq laws in Russia during their broadcasts, they WANT that kind of attention. He is exactly the kind of athlete they'd be all over having there. Far from being a PR disaster, it would be a golden opportunity for the USOC and NBC.

He really should have won the bronze medal in 2010.
