I'm not a fan of mindmelds and mindlinks and soulgazes and whatnot because it makes me uncomfortable to even imagine how that would work.

I feel like I have read fic like that before...but I could be wrong. I've read so many pon farr fics that they all fuse together and I can't differentiate them.

(If I hadn't stopped using delicious than I might've been able to help, but as is my bookmarks are all over the place and I can rarely find what I want. So...sorry. But maybe you should try at this comm?)

I used to read a lot of pon farr fics when I was younger, but I seem to gravitate towards the longer scope fics that don't feature it anymore.

I hope you find what your looking or one day, OP!

...what about fic that doesn't involve pon farr? Is there a significant difference?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a HUGE difference! For one thing, it's the only time Vulcans lose control of their emotions without any major trauma or something to cause it. Also, the whole "need to mate" thing is a pretty common kink. Plus, pon farr is a unique enough thing that the OP could specifically want to read about it sometimes, not just restrict themselves to non-pon-farr fic.

[Picture is Spock and Kirk from the older Star Trek version. They are standing looking at each other in a desert place. Spock has lightly tanned light skin, short black hair and is wearing a warm-looking white coat, the fluffy kind for a cold climate. Kirk has light skin that looks burned and a few scrapes on his forehead, short dark hair, and is wearing a white shirt and a red suit jacket or sweater?]

I wish I could find just ONE good Kirk/Spock fic where having sex during pon farr *doesn't* result in a super-duper mystical automatic permanent mindlink bond that the author spends one thousand words describing even though it's entirely unneeded. I have nothing against the trope per se, but what, is them getting together with their *own* emotions as the focus and with their minds intact not special enough?

I make exceptions because I can see Kirk being weird enough (or read: enough unlike me, I'm trying to respect cultural differences, LOL) to be totally okay with it, but I hate the idea that they automatically have to be telepathically linked to be together, especially if it's like they can literally read each other's minds when they're ~bonded. Ugh. And there is nothing worse than the whole "Well, I guess I love you because it's destiny, even though I didn't think I loved you before I realized we were bonded" plots, especially because they could be done so well if some actual independently realized emotions were there too.

The Pocket Books made it bondmates out to be like silent CB radio, where the bonded couple was on the same frequency after melding, so to speak, and to TP communicate with others, Vulcans had to be either exceptionally strong, or under extreme duress, emotional or physical. Or be physically touching/in v. close proximity with the other Vulcan.

TL;DR read The IDIC Epidemic and The Vulcan Academy Murders, they are both quite good.

Oh dear lord, seconded. I could maybe read it as a weird kink but most authors don't even realise this means the character has effectively forfeited their free will.

I hatehatehate "bondmates" and similar. Just because I love someone, doesn't mean I want to mindmeld with them. And my lack of wanting my every thought to be exposed to someone shouldn't be taken as it "not really being true love".

Have you tried AOS pon farr/bonding fics?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Pon farr doesn't come up as a plot device that much (at least to me, but I don't read much TOS fic so I can't be sure). More often than not, pon farr gets treated like a sexpollen trope (re: excuse to have the characters fuck like rabid bunnies on E and crack), and/or the psychic aspects are treated as a culmination of a story's worth of bonding or psychic activity.

Try really old fics. Like, TOS classical ones from fanzines etc. They used to deal a lot with feelings and much less with cliched mindlinks.
It seems fanfics devolved heavily after 2009 and for the most part consist of pwp and stupid tropes allowing to skip all the reasoning behind Kirk and Spock relationship.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding me? Classic TOS fanfic had just as much mindmeld crap as 2009 Trek fic, it's just that people haven't bothered typing it up to put it on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're looking for pon farr with consequences other than mindmeld, I seem to remember a late 90s Trek fic which deconstructed the old 'oops captain it's the pon farr' trope pretty well. Triggery, though, think novel-length fic version of Killa's 'Closer' vid.

I can try to look it up, it's probably on one of the classic archives with embarrassing names like T'h'yla.
